In the last few months I have been toying with the idea of getting involved in some other types of 2 wheel fun. Where I live there are tons of options for off highway use, (the Sierra Nevada's) and countless miles of logging roads. I'm not talking full on hardcore dirt riding here, but if I spot a trail along the way, I want to be able to hop on it and see where it leads.

I am also interested in attending the occasional track day, but don't need the break neck speed involved with a full on crotch rocket, but would like to work on skill's that I am not interested in persuing on the street. A good freind of mine who used to be 3rd fastest desert racer in the state Oregon suggested a steet legal supermoto instead of investing in 2 different rides for both activities. I am looking at the KTM's and would like to get any feedback from anyone who has gone this route. :)

Even though the KTM's look kinda nice, I could easily be talked into one of these DRZ400SM"R".

I looked at the DRZ when I was last at the dealer. Seems to me the parts availability, etc. on the Yammie might be better for you, unless there is quick availability online or a KTM dealer in Modesto. One of the drawbacks of livin' in a semi-remote place.

They are also the closest Suzuki dealer as well. I'm starting to think I should stay away from the bike show, bad place for my wallet indeed.

I'm riding an 02' DRZ-400S and love it! This bike with dual sport tires and a 13T counter shaft sprocket is great in the dirt (for a 300 lb. dirt bike). Switch to sport bike tires and 17" wheels and it's a terrific street machine and track tool! I'm faster on my 40 hp DRZ than I am on my 100 hp CBR600! In stock trim, the DRZ is a great mulit use bike, but if you're going to run competitively with KTM's, CRF450, etc.. it'll need a few hop up parts.

I have a '05 Suzook DR-Z400SM and based on the limited riding I was able to do before my o.e. hip gave out, the bike is a short range curvy road blast to ride! I did get a Corbin saddle which helps decrease the pain from the stock torture rack...err...saddle. Not real fast and certainly short ranged but definately a huge grin factor when underway on back roads. Very good brakes, too. DFO :D

Ah, yup, that would be the one! Now mebbe I'd let her ride pillion.....nope. Back to the bike, it looks like the engine protection would be a litle "iffy" on dirt roads. Certainly not one I'd like to go playing "foolhardy" in the dirt. Still, if unique and fast is your thing :)

And yes, she looks fast!

Where did that pictured Suzook SMR come from? Is that some dealers customized bike or??? Sure looks more eye ball appealing than my all black DR-Z400SM.

Very interesting....or is it the blue that caught my eye while I wait and wait for my new blue '06 A to arrive??? DFO
