Bike 'stumbled' once today on the return leg of a short ride, but it was so brief I thought I imagined it.

About 30 minutes later, I stopped to purchase a few groceries. Started up, crossed an intersection and she died.

I managed to coast into a convenient parking space, and subsequently pushed the bike into the parking lot of the nearby custom bike shop, the proprietor of which is a friend, (despite being a HD affectionado)

(I consider myself fortunate that this didn't happen earlier, when I was far from assistance, and out on the highway on a very warm and smokey day!)

Anyway, we eventually loaded the feej onto his mc trailer, and I got the thing home.

All peripherals seem to work, although I cannot test the headlights as she turns over, but won't start. I don't think it's 'fast starter' syndrome, as the engine cut out after starting, and running. Also I now realize the earlier 'stumble' was a prelude to the failure.

I've already started stripping the tupperware, but would appreciate any suggestions as to which particular spider may be the culprit. This is annoying, as I'm pretty sure I checked and treated all them dratted arachnids a couple years ago.

Ideas?

TIA

Started w/o issue this morning.

Shut down, and ran through the diagnostics, although no errors were automatically displayed, and it appears there may be a problem with the coolant temperature sensor.

Fortunately I have a replacement on hand, so I'll do that later today and see what happens.

Meanwhile, I'm stripping her down anyway to check all connectors

I'll report when done

Thanks for the replies, my friends.

Or a side stand switch, which can also be tested via diAG.
If side-stand switch, it would still be able to be started in neutral. It is, however, very much worth your while to go through the diag tests systematically. Check the electrical connectors on the bottom of your tank; especially if you have been under there for anything lately. Does the fuel pump run when you turn the key on?

I was thinking "kill switch" but the engine wouldn't turn over. Might be worth checking out the ignition switch using a multimeter. I don't remember if the ignition switch recall applied to later Gen II or not - I don't think so but should be checked.

Doesn't sound like a typical grounding (aka spider) problem. Those seem to manifest themselves with oddities with dash indicators, signal lights, horn, windshield etc.

Seems it was indeed due to a crooked coolant temp sensor after all. I think the thing was providing erroneous data to the ECU, and the resultant incorrect, probably rich, fueling led to the engine stall and failure to restart. The bike was able to restart the next morning, as excess fuel had evaporated.

The particular diagnostic code -- d:06 Error: 21

The 'spare' sensor I had on hand after my holey radiator experience a while back had me suspecting the original had been damaged due to a rather hot engine. It seemed to go back to normal operation, so I, (foolishly), didn't bother replacing it.

I took the bike for a short ride today, and it's back to it's feisty self.

very warm and smokey day!
Possibly Fuel Tank venting problem? Could explain the sputtering, normal start next morning, and accessories (electrical) working.

Keep the $.02

OK, I understand now about the 'spare' temp sensor. I was beginning to think there were some seriously OCD folks around here.

Glad she's feisty again ....

Almost the first things I checked, but the fuel cap opened without any gushing or whooshing sounds. There was a slight smell of gas, but I think that was due to an over-rich/flooding condition.

Well, I am OCD, but not to the extent of having all the spare parts for the feej. Not that I wouldn't like to have an fjr parts bike available. Hmm...
