You will find that cycle mfgs are very reluctant to use them, especially on sport bikes and for good reasons. They work very hard to minimize unsprung weight, especially rotational mass, to make the bike respond quicker and steer lighter. Run flat tires tend to add too much weight and would change the whole feel of the bike. On some heavy cruisers that do not need rapid directional change they are much less noticable.
Since almost all tire failures are preempted by pressure loss or temperature increase, tire pressure/temp monitoring systems are (IMO) invaluable on 2 wheel applications where the vehicle's loss of stability is so great. They would also pay dividens in performance and tire wear as low pressure causes most problems in these areas.
I have been looking for a system to use but have not found anything I like so far. There are a couple mfgs, SmarTire, Accutire and Hella that produce systems. SmarTire has the only application for mototcycles that I know of but I do no like the hoaky sensor mounting system. Also, the display is not tested to be waterproof. There is some talk they are in grave financial trouble. The Hella system seems much better but I have not been able to get detailed info yet. They do not market a specific two wheel system. I have been talking with a manufacturer I deal with who, as I find out, produces high quality industrial pressure monitor systems and they tell me they might be able to package a waterproof, wireless, 2 (lightweight)sensor system with both pressure and temprature readout and settable alarms if they though there was enough interest.
If anyone knows of a high quality monitoring system with the things I have outlined, let me know before I go reinventing the wheel . . .
That would be a great group buy! Stay tuned.
