https://www.gate1travel.com/europe-travel/i...FA-FCE96B2ED224 Have we any Irishmen now on this FJR Forum? Seems I recall a Dubliner once upon a time posting here abouts!

Dublin Travelers: My 12 year old son Seth and I have a full day at leisure in Dublin on Saturday, March 14, 2009.

Looking for suggestions from you for things that you highly recommend for a Father and Son to see in Dublin town.

On Monday 3/9 Gate1 Travel is providing: "This morning's sightseeing includes a panoramic tour of Dublin including visits to Trinity College, home to the Book of Kells, St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Stephen's Green." So we do not want to duplicate those items! Do we have the time in one day to rent a car and take the coastal road to Drogheda in Donegal County, visiting the Stanley clan ancestral village of Slane?

If we are at Slane, we could visit the fighting field of the Battle of the Boyne, where good King James was defeated by evil King Billy! Then perhaps south to Kildare County eventually winding up at Wicklow Head in County Wicklow. Then the coast road through Bray to return the car to the Dublin rental agency.

Fans of Dublin, Eire: We Stanley Boys would love to hear your tourist information suggestions for our Day in Dublin!

Thanks ShinyPartsUp! I'll send an e-mail to Beano. Stanley Family is from County Donegal and I want to show it to Seth.

I believe that Orestes, David Clarke from Chatham, England, travels to Ireland by FJR. I'll see if he has any day trip routes.

Hi Don

I'm afraid I do not know that part of Eire too well as I've usually been making my way towards the west coast.

Two questions, the Drogheda and Slane I know off are in Co. Louth and Co. Meath respectively, about 30 mile North of Dublin, not in Co. Donegal which is in the far NW and far beyond a day trip. If these are the two places you mean, and certainly the Battle of the Boyne was fought in Co. Louth, your suggested route is quite possible in a day. I would estimate 220 miles in total.

So Dublin-Drogheda-Slane-Navan. Then South through Trim-Kilcock to Naas then SE through the Wicklow Mountains National Park to Rathdrum and then onto Arklow before turning North to Wicklow and the coast road through Bray to Dublin. On my one and only trip on the coast road North I found the traffic very heavy and hard going and if I were doing it again I would stay in the mountains and instead of going to Rathdrum I would turn North at Laragh and go through Sally Gap and Glencree to Dublin. That would be about 150 miles which would give you more time in Drogheda and Slane

I'll send a rough map by email

I'll ask some friends on the FJ Club for any other ideas and get back to you, probably early next week.

Dave "Orestes"

Yes David, You are 100% correct! Not sure why I typed Donegal, my senility I guess, definitely County Louth!

Hi Don boy you sure get around...

just my 2 cents worth.

Thank you Fairlaner, I will definitely do that! Trip's all paid and booked, so I'll pick up Euros from Bank of America Monday.

Old Michael just sent me a very nice personal message regarding his close family ties to Ireland; first generation Irishman!

Richard, after my heart attack in October of 2005 while Seth and I were skin diving in Hawaii: I am grabbing the brass ring!!

I can trace my family back four generations in the Galway area without sweat. McNamara's are fairly common around there. My trips were some of the best memories I have, and I wish you luck and good times with your son. Someday I'm going back to see some real roadracing the old fashioned way...

Amen Shiny.

A note - My dear dad, whilst serving in the British Army in '44, was stationed at ----The Isle of Man.

Oh, to witness the event first-hand. Certainly the hugest nads in racing.

EOM (IOM) 2010? It'd be glorious. (Sorry for the jack beemerdee. Have a fantastic trip.)

https://www.realroadracing.com/ ShinyPartsUp McNamara: Lad, were ye thinking the Isle of Man TT or the Ulster Grand Prix or some of the lesser events in Ireland? I have two road trips into Mexico this year - April and October, CFR in June and BMW MOA Rally at The Dragon in Tennessee in July; next year is going to be taken up with a month long ride to Guatemala.

I certainly would consider returning to Eire by motorcycle in Summer 2011 and if a visit to Races was possible I'd be game!

Seth would be 14 then and that would be a great M/C outing for us (I'll be 62 then). If there was enough interest here, I'd start communicating with David Clarke - Orestes of Chatham, England. FJR Forum member here and a long distance rider.

I wish Seth and I had more time in Galway, just a day on our packaged tour. Good enough reason to return to Eire in 2011!

Old Michael: I'll have more time to talk to you about this at CFR. What do you say? FJR US Irish head back home in 2011??

https://www.iomtt.com The 2011 TT race dates are May 28-June 10. This will be the Centenary of the Mountain Course. Any takers from our FJR Forum? I plan on picking up the same BMW R1150RT from Stefan Knopf I rented in May of 2007.

From Heidelberg directly across Germany and France to the Ferry at Calais to Dover. Couple of nights in London, overnight in Birmingham, then to Liverpool for the Ferry to Douglas on the Isle of Man. From Douglas by Ferry to Belfast, Ulster.

Week from Belfast through Derry and Donegal to Dublin, stopping at Ballymoney to place flowers on statue of "Yer Maun" Joey Dunlop. Want to check out Galway/Clare! From Rosslare Harbour to Cherbourg to tour Normandy WWII beaches.

A couple of "wild" nights in Paris and then blast back to https://www.knopftours.com and fly home again from Frankfurt, D.

https://www.dublinpubscene.com/thepubs/doolans_map.html Old Michael, our Fellow Paddy Seamus gave me an even better map link showing Doolan's Pub on Hogan Square. Bejaysus, OM: Only two blocks from the Mespil Hotel on Merrion Square.

I was going to rent us a wheelbarrow, so my 12 year old son Seth could bring Da home from Doolan's after an evening of Smithwick's and Bushmill's. But aye and begorah: I can crawl two Dublin city blocks and save young Seth the extra effort!

I will definitely ask the older pub crowd if they remember yer Da; "Mixer" O'Keeffe. We'll be in Doolan's Sunday by sunset!!

Oh, Smitticks! Had more than a few in Kilkenny with a violet eyed lass many years ago. And the two bottles of Bushmills I opened at home for my college graduation were loved by all. Keep talking and I'm going to have to book a trip next year -- damn yer eyes :D

Here is the General Store of Michael O'Keeffe at 615 Fitzwilliam Street in Dublin, Ireland. The picture was taken in 1919 and the location is halfway between Merrion Square and Hogan Square. Our own Old Michael's Eire family neighborhood.

Here are BeemerDonS and Son Seth standing on the Ramparts of Bunratty Castle outside of Cork. The Irish Folk Park is also here: A recreation of an Irish Parish Village of the 1880's, they moved authentic buildings from all over for the old town.

Our first Irish President of United States of America. He attended the Opening of Galway Cathedral and his mosaic is here.
