Anyone headed Saturday to an array of events in Midtown, downtown Atlanta and Buckhead should prepare for potential traffic delays.
More than 160,000 people are expected to attend events that start at 6 a.m. and end close to midnight, according to the Atlanta Police Department's Web page of events. Most of them likely will drive, as opposed to arriving on MARTA or another transit operator.
An event headlined by Donald Trump at the Georgia World Congress Center marks the return of a real estate expo whose attendees contributed to gridlock in downtown Atlanta Jan. 25. It's expected to attract 20,000 persons from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
An oyster festival in Buckhead, at Steamhouse Lounge, is expected to attract 8,000 people to an area that typically is stop-and-go on Saturday afternoons. Construction on Piedmont Road that has caused extreme delays is expected to be finished by 5 p.m. Friday, according to Janet Ward, spokeswoman for Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management.
A motorcross show at the congress center, Supercross, is expected to attract 65,000 for an event that begins at 7 p.m. That's the same an expected sell-out crowd expected at Philips Arena for the Thrashers/Hurricanes hockey game.
In Midtown, the Fox Theatre has performances of Spamalot set for 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. And just south of the Fox, the Atlanta Civic Center has the Atlanta Blues Festival starting at 8 p.m.
