Has anybody installed an auto cancel turn signal relay to an FJR ?? I used to have a Honda that had one and got really spoiled. If you see an 06 FJR and the turn signals on for miles and miles - Its me. :D

Does the Kisan require you to do something special to "reset" the signals before turning them on again? Some of the after market ones, IIRC, made you push in the lever (like turning them off manually), before they would turn on (but only if they autocanceled sometime before), or something like that.

Yes, you have to reset the turn signal button before the signals will activate again if they automatically timed out on the last cycle. That is the nature of the turn signal switch and the way it is wired on the FJR from what I can tell.

Here's the previous info.... https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...c=7762&hl=kisan

If I recall correctly, mine has a setting for 10,20, or 30 flashes before timing itself out. I may try the brake light switch mod to keep the unit on during long traffic lights, as well as selecting the 30 flash interval(instead of 20).

BTW

It's quite easy not to notice that the turn signal has already self-cancelled, and you have yet to complete a left turn! :poster_oops:

Thanks for posting. I also have a Goldwing which has cancelling turn signals standard. For the life of me, I don't know why this isn't a safety requirement on all motorcycles. As much as I hate to say it, I think the government is going to have to get involved with certain safety standards on motorcycles because the manufacturers don't seem to want to do it on their own.

Why do you not have a problem forgetting to turn on your turnsignal when you change direction, but do have a problem turning off your turn signal when you are done with your direction change? I don't get it. It's the same action. It's a matter of conditioning your brain to do so.

I did this mod on mine...took input from the front brake wire and isolated with diodes.

actually, the preset times are 8, 16, and 24 seconds. At least that's what it says in my instructions.

And yes, if you let it self-cancel it won't work again on the same side if you don't push in the manual cancel. But it WILL work if you turn opposite direction.

Same reason I have trouble understanding sentences with double-negatives

As a matter of fact I do have a problem with not forgetting to turn my turn signal on when I change directions....now what do I do....????

Besides...I remember to turn it off 90% of the time. It's the other 10% that is annoying and possibly dangerous that bothers me. What is wrong with error proofing the operation as much as possible??

I bet if the truth were known Yamaha or somebody was probably sued at some point for having/not having self canceling turn signals so they never/quite putting them on motorcycles. Once precedents are set with things like that it is hard to change them. Even with government mandated devices it doesn't stop the manufacturers from getting sued for the action/inaction of the device so they will resist incorporating them some times. Even changing the design to incorporate a device (like a self canceling turn signal) could lead to a lawsuit later on down the line as if it were an admission that the previous model designs were inferior.

Toyota was once sued by a person hurt in an accident that was driving a Toyota without an air bag. The person claimed that if the car had had an airbag they wouldn't have gotten hurt and that obviously Toyota knew about airbags because they were on the following model year of that exact car.....soo...the conclusion that led to the lawsuit was that it was Toyota's fault that the person was hurt since they were not proactive in putting air bags in one model year sooner. Regardless of the outcome it costs the manufacturer tons of $$$ to defend against.

I can see someone with self cancelling turn signals getting hit while turning and claiming that their signal quite on it's own so the car that ran them down didn't know they were turning and therefore it was Yamaha's fault for putting the self canceling signal on. And Yamaha must have known they were dangerous as they never put them on motorcycles before model XX came out....... Don't laugh.

I hooked up the brake light feed to my Kisan also and it works nicely to prevent the timeout from occuring. Just curious why you isolate the brake light feed with diodes? I didn't isolate mine and the Kisan wiring diagram doesn't mention the need to isolate the circuit. Not that it isn't a good idea...just didn't think why it was needed.

You are right. If the turn signal is moved to the other side it will work immediately but it has to be canceled then reapplied to the same side to get it to flash again.

I think what you want to hear is - I am a putz - OK there it is. :D I had an 85 Honda for 21 years and when out of the State on vacation I rent Harleys, all of them have A better system than Yamaha - (no system). My Honda had a lean or mercury switch so when you lean into a turn it cancels the the blinker but when you change lanes it did not. I got very used to it and the new FJR is different. From all of the feedback ( Thank You ) I am seeing that there is no perfect product on the market to add on to the FJR. If I do anything it might be to add a tone or beep sound to the turn signal as a reminder but first I will give it some time and try to work with what the bike has. I love this bike, It has serious scoot - the tires will not last long. :yahoo:

Part of the turn signal self cancel was a 'sensor' a.k.a. pot on the steering stem. If you looked the very bottom of the steering stem you would have seen what looked like a little pointer. Not mercury. B)

The turn signal self cancel did work well, didn't it!

I was not sure how it worked but it worked very well, obviously I never had to repair it - Thanks for the diagram of the bomb

I've been used to bikes with self-canceling signals for years. I agree that hitting the cancel button is a relearning exercise and the times I forget worry me the most. Also, sometimes I remember, but driving situations at times dictate I keep my hand still for safety reasons. But even after a short time riding my '06 Feejer, I'm getting better at remembering. I think I too will try to work with the bike for a while and see if I can get used to it. I found myself hitting the cancel button 9/10 times, even with self-canceling lights because they didn't cancel fast enough (safety hazard too) or just because that was ingrained from years ago. I also have been lurking and reading and am not happy with the Farkles available on the market.

Ah, yes, the old turn signal debate. It's all what you're used to, I guess. I took the MSF course in '73, been riding on the street ever since. The instructor was an Air Force sergeant with, shall we say, a colorful way of expressing himself. Anyway, I remember two things on this particular subject from that class. The first was something to the effect of always using your signal, even for lane changes, and then TURN IT OFF. The second was the hand signal used to indicate you're riding around with your turn signal on, opening and closing the hand, finger tips to thumb tip, kind of like a blinking light. It just stuck with me. It's a habit now (turning off my turn signals, not the hand signal thing; that would be weird).

I vote no on auto-canceling turn signals for my motorcycles.
