Thinking about a autocom or starcom and wondering if someone has pic's. Interested in pic's with everything in a tank bag, and under seat setup. If you can post them here... Thanks Smitty :)

I'll try and add tonight with my spiffy new Olympus E-500. I've got a Yamaha tank bag with a Starcom velcored to the size, powered, and various cables tucked in tupperware.

Hey Smitty,

I run the tankbag setup. It's in there but its hard to see. I have the Autocom Super Pro Avi. Through the tankbag I have powered...phone charger, autocom, xm radio, and laptop. All are hooked up to the Autocom as well.

Long shot of layout inside tank bag. Starcom Advance is velcroed to the side at an angle to be able to see business end while in the saddle.

Two of three holes in the bag. Lower right is power cord with a electrical clamp you'd find in your circuit breaker box. Upper left is just a whole with jack from GPS audio and V1 cable fed through. See previous picture, upper right for hole to coiled audio cable to helmet.

Power terminal inside tupperware. Source power are heat shrinked connections. Outgoing juice includes Starcom, radar detector, phone charger, CB and other stuff. Red and black sharpie to color code and reduce chance of popping a fuse.

Close-up of several tupperware pieces. Tupperware is nice because it helps put loose wires in bundles and still leave room in the tank bag for other things as well as being reasonably water resistant in downpours that make the tankbag moist.

I was wondering if anyone had a pic of Keith's work. You know the guy from Tulsa truck center.... I talked to him yesterday, and wondering what his work looked like... Smitty :)

This is what I have with a Pro7 Autocom in the Yamaha tank bag. All the guts of the system reside in the left storage pocket, with a VOX extension shaft protruding through the back for easy adjustment while on the move.

This evening I'll get some pictures up.

Here's my setup, very similar to what Keith sells. The first picture shows the guts and leads for the helmet, GPS, radar and power plumbed into a Joe Rocket Manta tank bag. I haven't gotten around to loading up the iPod with music yet so the CD player is still in the system.

This one shows it all zipped up. with the cell phone added and in the top pocket. This is the setup I use around town (with phone in pants pocket), as I can't seem to enjoy riding without audio input from the RD or tunes.

I also have a much larger bag, for trips, wired the same.

Smitty Keith does a good job and has a quick turnaround. I bought my autocom from him and he did my tankbag setup. He even let me upgrade my autocom after I hated the Active PLus I purchased. He is forgetful though so remind him occasionally. Here are pics without the laptop...

AND the original setup with the old autocom and before xm, gps and before i cut off the flaps of the tankbag and moved the magnets to directly below the bag.

Wellll...primarily it was because of too many false triggers esp with a pillion...it would drive me nuts and nothing worked. Then I wanted to have the option for only my pillion to hear the music and not me. I sometimes like the sound of the road and not music but I need to keep her happy. This is impossible to do on the active plus. I also liked the idea of the auto vox control and the auto volume on the super pro avi. Both of which i dont use now because they dont work like they should. Great ideas though...the autovox (ambient mic) is supposed to adjust as you pick up speed and it gets louder in your helmet...well this didnt work as i would get frequent false triggers and it would never adjust enough unless i stood up on the pegs and had the mic outside of the helmet directly in the wind stream. Same with the autovolume...it just never got loud enough. However with both of these functions turned off it works really well. It's just unfortunate you have to pay so much for technology that doesn’t work. So I am happy now...no more false triggers, plenty of volume, perfect vox when speaking to the pillion at any speed. Phone hookup, gps hookup, xm radio hookup all in use now. Still a little pissed at autocom though...their customer support is a joke...and this thing was a fortune after all was said and done.

Smitty, I've got an Autocom under seat on the GS. It fit nicely into the box that normally holds the toolset. The FJR has this box as well, of course. It has a high quality "push-to-talk" switch on the left grip as well. Seems to be a good installation. I suspect it was done by John Simmons at Grassroots BMW. The Autocom is wired for a two-way radio, XM radio and intercom, but the guy I bought it from would not part with the headsets, or radios, so I haven't been using it. Someday I'd like to wire in the Escort at least and maybe a two-way radio, so let me know which one you get and I'll get the same so we can chat on rides if we want to.

Smitty,

I set up my AutoCom unit under the seat with the radio and I keep the MP3 and Cel phone in the tank bag for easy access.

I posted a few pics of the under seat install on this (see CLICKY) thread which mainly dealt with the Blue Sea distribution block but also shows the AutoCom/radio install: CLICKY

I like this setup as it uses available tail section space and keeps my high$ components in a safe location.

Rob
