Anybody here into AutoX? My wife and I bought a Miata 7 years ago to play in the sun with, turns out it was my first 'race car' too. Without a doubt this is the most fun Ive ever had in a car and recommend anyone with a 'need for speed' to look into the local AX scene. You will find some really great people having a whole lot of fun and learn to drive a bunch better too. As a motorcyclist I believe I showed up with something of an advantage over the typical rookie with a finer sense of traction and ability to see thru a corner. Just about any car will do but you will soon find yourself looking at better tires, suspension, alignments etc... OK, Im babbling..... :haha:

PC, looks like you got bit by the AX bug pretty bad! Nice website you have there. The local scene here is seasonal, gives me a chance to farkle the Miata. Just added a Torsen diff this winter, cant wait to have at it this spring.

What year is that airhead in your avatar? Seems we have those in common too, owned 71 R75/5 for many years, never considered racing it though! B)

Yep, started with a '95 Integra GSR. A co-worker got me into it. Went through a S2000 and a C5 Z06, all in our local "street tire" classes. A couple of years back I was the club rep for CASOC, one of the oldest auto-x clubs (pre-dating the SCCA) and an instructor in our regional training classes. I'm taking some time out from the sport for a while now.

My best advice is to spend almost nothing on car preparation and work seriously on driving skill. Skills gain multiple seconds while prep gains tenths or less. I had the experience of many passenger runs, in my cars, with ex-National champions driving (Tom Berry, David Palmquist, Tom Smith, Leslie Cohen and other So Cal hot-shoes). It really opens your eyes to see how much a mere mortal like myself leaves on the table.

Making the elephant dance is a lot harder than it looks.

Did it years ago with one of the first Rabbit GTi's delivered here. Had Bilsteins, a header, tuned the Bosch CSI Injection, that little ****** rocked. I recall a fine fall Sunday afternoon when a friend with a new Honda CRX and I tore up the Twin Cities something fierce, an all out top speed bash from Brooklyn Center to Elko Speedway, about 40-50 miles. Did it in 35 minutes or so. This was all through city driving, it was just obscene, fast and furious type ****. The guy I had riding with me swore he'd never get in a car with me again, even though he had a **** eatin grin the entire time. Especially when I told him to fold the mirror on his side in as I needed every mile per hour I could get, this when I was side by side with the Honda at 125 mph on a two lane. I have no idea how I still have a license.... Then there was the time when I drove a Junior Fueler down main street Savage at 11 pm, chute and all......... :D

Yeah, I thought I was gettin' beat by Mark Madarash's SSP Fireturd for a couple of years. Then Mark offered to drive my Eclipse GSX and let me have a turn at his `bird at a local.

I took up needlepoint...

Similiar but different......... I thought my car was holding me up, Mark Daddio takes it for a fun run and knocks a full second off my best run, never having driven my car prior. Humbling for sure.
