Don, et.al., is there a backup location, just in case there's lots of fluffy white stuff on the road?
Hal, If you go up to Post #11 that I placed at 12:33 PM yesterday 1/22, you'll see the backup plan. When we arrive at the McDonald's restaraunt at 0945 we'll be able to see the face of Bradshaw Mountains and know if there's snow there or not!

Since you're coming in by way of Salome and Alamo Lake we'll not take that option. So you can see new territory with us, we'll ride from Wickenburg up to Bagdad or Hillside and have brunch there. Don't hesitate to use my cell: 602-722-0427.

 
Quick warning guys. My boss just told me he got popped with photo radar westbound on highway 69 between Prescott Valley and Prescott. I know this isn't the planned route, but just tossing it out there in case someone decides to deviate from the route.

We are getting a nice RSVP going on for this FJR ride. Not a bad idea to put your good rain suit in a saddlebag and if you have electric vests, bring them with you. If wet stuff is falling from the sky we'll definitely divert to Bagdad for Brunch.

 
Don't tell me that the bimmer folks are afraid of their final drives melting in the rain? I know their somewhat fragile, but I'm pretty sure they can handle a little rain.

Hmm... gonna have to dig out my electric vest out of the closet.

Discretion is the better part of valor! Many in AZ Beemers are receiving correspondence from our BMW rider friends that were heading to Furnace Creek for our Annual BMW Death Valley Daze. Everywhere west of the Sierras we are hearing about intense rain and snow down to the 1,500 foot level in California. It's one thing to get caught in a storm and an entirely different matter to start on a motorcycle journey in a tempest. Four AZ Beemers left Phoenix last night and they were staying at the Pahrump Nugget and they made it there just fine. Six more BMW's, with three passengers, left this morning to camp out at the Death Valley Furnace Creek Group Campground with whatever other BMW folks that are weathering out the storm.

We here in Phoenix are wondering if they'll be able to get out of Death Valley on Monday if the storm hits with the ferocity that is now forecasted. I led the DV Daze Run for a decade and one year we were trapped due to mudslides on all the roads.

DECISION TIME: Here is National Weather Service Forecast for 1/27/08!!

“Showers early, becoming a steady rain later in the day. High of 61 degrees.

Winds SSE at 10 to 20 mph. Rainfall near half an inch.” As of 0800 hours.

So, basically it appears that this’ll be a ride to Wickenburg for brunch only.

I just wanted everyone to know that this will be a shorter ride of around four hours, instead of our usual eight hours in the saddle M/C riding marathons.

Basically, may be riding in drizzles for the AM, but be safely home by PM.

I will still be at I-17 and AZ 74 at 0900 and at Wickenburg McD’s at 0945.

I know that we have a lot of Military Veterans on this FJR site; Dale "Warchild" Wilson being career Navy and many others.

At Veteran's Day I was very proud to see how many veterans responded to my post wishing everyone a Great Vet's Day.

The weather is going to be really crappy today, as I'm sitting here drinking my coffee, at the kitchen table watching the rain.

It does not make good sense to suit up and take off in a storm, but I suddenly realized that it's the vets who are still riding!

I've made a very interesting observation, based on the original twenty who RSVP'd for this ride, and those who bailed out:

The ten who are still riding regardless of weather are:

Chuck Doucet: US Army Sergeant - K-9 handler in Vietnam.

Michael Conner: Coast Guard - Drug Enforcement Patrols.

Art Montoya: US Army Sergeant - Quartermaster Corps.

PeteK12GT: US Marines - Infantryman in Vietnam.

FJRobert: US Army Sergeant - Infantryman in Vietnam.

picinisco: Coast Guard - River Patrol Ops Vietnam.

Chuy Medina Stanley: US Army Sergeant 105mm howitzers.

Chuck Thompson: Career Law Enforcement Officer Wyoming.

Greg Marbach: US Navy Annapolis Graduate and LEO AZ & WY

**** Prince: Philadelphia Police Detective Narcotics Cop

I was impressed by the esprit de corps of these 10 men! It was a real eye opener to me when I discovered this connection.

The ten who bailed on the ride because of possible rain were all civilians and the ten still riding regardless are eight as soldiers or sailors, some shot in Vietnam, and the remaining two were career cops, one also shot. An amazing coincidence.

The Few, The Proud, The Brave! A big OORAH for these veterans! I am really glad to be riding today with these great guys.

I've the pleasure of adding the name of one more military veteran that rode with us today in the rain: Roger Williams, Army.

We of the AZ FJR Forum were really impressed with kaitsdad riding over in the rain from Orange, California for our brunch.

Hal rode 375 miles to be with us, yakked/joked with us about motorcyles and riding, and headed back 375 miles in the rain.

Someone was missing from this ride, weren't they? Ai caramba! Donde esta Senor Arturo Montoya? Una la chica hombre!

OK, I'm back 16:35 hours.

Trip there - 04:30 departure, and with the exception of about 50 miles east of Blythe, it rained. I kept on looking up trying to see the cow. It just never stopped. Sometimes it eased up a bit, other times it was a frog choker. All in all, though, not bad. Temps in the 40's and low 50's.

And I aptley demonstrated the effects of the stitch 'crotch leak'.

Trip back, from Blythe to Banning, sunny skies, temps in mid 60's, very little wind, and things actually dried out - then in Banning, the temp dropped to 48, and the skies opened up.

My stitch is currently hanging up with a space heater aimed at it.

Oh yeah - Corned beef hash and eggs over medium, hash browns, sour dough toast and lots of hot coffee when I arrived. And they didn't mind my gear dripping on the floor.

Greg, thanks for the meal !!

Don, thanks for setting this up. Good stuff. Now - why don't you give us a final tally of just who showed up? And what's this I heard about Senor Arturo - suptin' about soft, warm pillows? ;)

Tx for posting up Hal, I wasn't going to sleep until you got back.

In another thread, I would be VERY interested to hear your insights regarding rain riding.

I still do NOT have this figured out. For 100, maybe 150 miles, I'm good... but really need to get fully 'water-proofed' for the all day rides. Please post up in another thread with what did and did not work.

Glad to hear you're back home Hal. It was really good seeing all the hearty souls that made it to a pretty good place to eat, surprising dining area in the back of such a small store front. Nice temperatures & just enough rain to not wash out the roads. Well actually all day solid rain but didn't dampen the conversations over some good grub.
