All,

Hoping someone might have some first hand experience with Hwy 93 from Kingman, AZ to Vegas.

I'm thinking of doing a wee bit of a ride.

Can you tell me if we would be able to average 65 to 70 mph on this road? LEO presence? Surface conditions? Anything?

Thanks!

depends on what day of the week.

the road is capable of being driven fast - though there can be some LEO presence around the various small towns. It is pretty much wide open, but can be treacherous in a rain storm as some of the gullies will fill up with water and ou wont know how deep they are (and they can be deep). for the most part it is a pretty boring and relatively straight road. watch out for Wikiup as a speed trap and you will slow down if you are heading over boulder dam (hoover dam.... whatever).

road conditions are good, but it can be heavily travelled on weekends, but there is usually a place to pass - BUT - be careful. Due to the undulations of the road - what looks long and straight can be hiding a car behind a hill - (or a LEO).

Hoover Dam can be soul-crushingly slow during the day. Go at night and it's no sweat.

93 in general though is a nice fast road.

I'm curious to see your complete route, as I've thought about that before for a B2BInsane in the membrane.

I have been on 93 between Kingman and Vegas more times than I care to remember. Most of it from Kingman to the Dam is 4 lane divided highway like an interstate. Never been on it during fowl weather, but it is faaaaast! wink-wink The occasional LEO, but more times than not I have not seen a single one. When you hit the two lane part, it can be a bit slow if during peak traffic times. Like Georgie said, avoid Hoover Dam during peak times, especially weekend days. It will be stop-n-go, and can take an hour just to go a few miles near the dam. Late at night, no problemo.

Out of curiousity, what route are you thinking for the rest of the B-to-B?

Woodstock,

Still playing with the route.

Tecate, Mexico to Lethbridge, Alberta, would result in 1538 miles, which would also be a BBG.

Uses I15 just about the whole way.

Odot, Beeroux, I'm working this out with TurboDave, seems he's got a hankering for a B2BI. We're lookin at a route that will stretch it to about 1550 mi for a BBG as well, just for backup. I'm looking at different ways of stretching the route - a jog from 15 to 40 to 93 back to 15 would add miles - as well as just a shot up the 15, crossing at Sweetgrass (B2BI completed here) and then on to Lethbridge, Alberta, for the BBG.

Don't know if that's a good place to spend the night - but it should be.

All of this information is great - we will consider it all.

Should be interesting. As we finalize route/dates, I'll let ya all know. Thanks - any more suggestions, by all means put them out there !!

Hal,

the road from Tecate is fun but hardly fast. Try Otay Mesa.

A bit north ( 4 miles? ) of Sweetgrass is a motel that has an ATM inside for a receipt, and if you get there before 2300 they will witness for you. They already know the drill and are happy to assist riders.

Another option is to leave from San Luis, AZ, go straight north to vegas, but hang a right at Lake Mead and toot around that, and hit the 15 somewhere quite above Vegas. Scenic, fairly fast, and no Vegas.

Numerous lonely roads to get the BBG in should that be the joy that floats your boat.

I rode 93 from Kingman to Las Vegas on my way to the Cal 24. I had no problems and did it at fairly aggressive speeds. No Leo's for me. Seemed to be a fine road.

When you boys gonna make your attempt? Curious minds want to know. :derisive:
Don't know yet. Will know later next week.

I'll let you know, Blue. You interested?
I might be interested if you think I could keep up and you want to have a third wheel along.

Question, If you named your bike "Wonky" does that make you a "Wonky rider" :p

Steve, hope you can join us on the ride. We have plenty of room for you to stayover with me prior to the trip down to the southern border. We need to settle on a mutually agreeded date period. I know from experience that I can BARELY keep up with you and Wonky.<lol>

:) Sounds like a hoot. I'm pretty much free any time between now and the middle of Sept.
