Two people who died Saturday night when a motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle southeast of Fresno were identified Sunday as Rogelio Sanchez of Sanger and Luis Felix of Huntington Park, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident at Temperance and Jensen avenues happened shortly before 10 p.m. when Sanchez, riding a motorcycle heading west on Jensen Avenue at what officers called a "tremendous speed," struck the rear passenger door of a late-model Chevrolet Yukon SUV that was making a left turn on to Temperance Avenue.
The impact was so great, said California Highway Patrol officer Matt Radke, that the Yukon was flipped over, and Sanchez, 27, was thrown through the rear window of the SUV, killing both himself and Felix, 48, a front-seat passenger in the Yukon.
The driver of the SUV, Hugo Martinez, 23, received moderate injuries, but declined treatment at the scene, the CHP said. Another passenger, Jose Felix, 27, who was seated in the right rear seat of the car, suffered major injuries, including a broken left leg and ankle. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment.
After the accident, the Yukon lay on the driver's side with a deep indention on the passenger side marking the spot where the motorcycle hit. The motorcycle shattered and burned on impact.
"This impact was so violent that the motorcycle is unidentifiable," Radke said.
Radke said alcohol did not appear to have been a factor.
"It's just high speed," Radke said. "We'll have to investigate to determine exactly how fast the motorcycle was going, but it's hard for drivers to gauge the speed of oncoming traffic when vehicles are going more than 60 miles per hour."
