Hell yeah I'm havin a bad day. I have been workin on my gen 1 lately and having big issues. The origonal owner installed a audiovox cc and did a hack job with mounting and running the wires wherever he pleased. I hated looking at it so this spring I took it upon myself to redo it. I reran the wires with a multiconductor to keep it neat and tried to keep very good track of the wires. I don't have the schematics so I was guessing on what the wires did. I completed the job and unfortunatley I hooked up a powersource to the two leads of the fjr. (powersource was battery charger). Then poof smoke and the smell of expensive components burning(rectifier). Did I go wrong with the wireing, powersource, or both. Does anybody have a schematic of the cruise control wires. Any clear idea on what the rectifier does, and why the motorcycle still runs? Info would be super, it would make my life less of a living hell.

Interesting how the hack job worked, while your improved "I don't need no stinking Schematic" let the smoke out. The bike doesn't need the wreck the frier to run-just charge the battery. At least the ECU didn't cook-and could have-or day would've been really bad.

How did I know some smart ass coment would come out of this! Thanks for the info. Do you think the battery charger fried it or the wireing job?

Rad,

No good deed goes unpunished.... that's what Dad always said.

Oh and lover boy, your spelling is as good as your wiring. :dirol:

Oh gawd Rad, you kill me..
Trust me noob, Rad will set you straight, he's one of the best we have on the forum all for all things FJR. It's just the way you set yourself up for the non Friday dogpile - it was really excellent, eh?

Oh, and welcome, if you survive this, you'll do just fine.

I'm not sure what "hooked up a power source to the two leads of the FJR" means. I'm guessing that you connected a battery charger to the FJR's battery cables, but left your battery disconnected. Bad ju-ju. Really bad if it happened to be reversed polarity!

Hell, I've been here since the get-go and get treated worse than that!

Rad tossed a big ol' creampuff, if ya ask me. :)

Here's how I start out. "Hey guys, I had another brain f--t and did something really stupid. I'd appreciate any help" This works on all the forums except Sport-Touring and even there most of the people are very helpful. Ian, Iowa

After rereading this, it sounds a little sanctimonious-sorry.

I knoweverybody means well, but are we here to talk about the one thing we love or are we going to complain about spelling!

...point is if you are literate enough to correct spelling and punctuation, you can probably read well enough to handle the re-wiring of your beloved FJR from a manual or other written reference, if not...hack it like you did the first time and see what happens...but this time you might not know if you fubar it or not, unless there is still some smoke left in the wires or wrecked-ifryer, or whatever other component is now garbage... :focus:

When I used to have a job, The first question in trouble shooting is.

Did you touch it and did anybody see you.????

Er...uhm...we might stop wasting so much energy being "pissy-faced" and offer helpful information.

Dave (Radman) gave the best help, cloaked in his usual satirical/humorous verbiage.

It is much easier to get a good answer if you ask a good question. In this case I not only don't really understand what happened I don't even know how to ask fjrlover to clarify what happened. I'm not clear enough about what happened between the AVCC, 'power source', reversed leads and smoking rectum-fryers to even guess what may have gone wrong. The only thing I'm clear on is that the PO did a hack job when wiring the AVCC.

[/soapbox]

So fjrlover, is the smoking rectum-fryer part of the voltage regulator or are you talking about the 'filter' that is part of the AVCC tach signal wire? (The tach filter is a 22k resistor, not a rectifier.) If you really hooked a battery charger (power source?) to your FJR's battery with the polarity reversed and it actually blew the voltage regulator (R/R) you could be in deep shit with your ECU and ABS ECU at the very least.

Ion (resident EE) & Foosh are right in asking that you clarify what it was you did and asking how we can help. Try re-reading your original post from the side of soembody a thousand miles away who's never seen your bike.

A suggested starting point would be to disconnect or just isolate the new stuff & get the bike running right before getting back to the AVCC. More than once, I've seen goofs like this create numerous secondary gremlins and those need to be found and killed, before the problems and attempted fixes become a snarled mess.

Actually the technical vagueness makes for more speculation and satire given the initial starting premise. ;)
damn you guys are right, after reading my post I would give shit to. Sorry. I have talked to numerous people and many of them say I smoked the rectifier because I did't have the battery hooked up or in the bike. The battery acts as a filter to knock the spiked a/c waves down before they go into the rectifier. Without the battery it was just raw waves. Thus overheating the frier and poof.

Wellll, let us know once you install a new part. Uh...you might want to disconnect your changes until you can double check the wiring. I'm just sayin'......

I'm saying because someone who lives in my house has been known to do stoopid stuff. I'm not naming names, but.....
