badly worn key

My key is on it's last leg. It's badly worn to the point ignition is getting very dicey and I really have to get it just right before it starts. Is this going to be a problem or do I simply go to a locksmith for a new key?

 
There was another thread around here that actually listed the aftermarket mfg. and M/N of the FJR key. A locksmith should be able to order them if not already in stock. Try a search.

 
If the key is so worn that it may stop working, what shape is the tumbler in the switch in? Just a new key may not fix it.

 
Am I missing something? If the key is worn, the new key will be the exact same thing if you take it to a hardware store, their machine just follows the pattern of the old key. With some cars you can give the dealer a vin number and they will make a key from scratch, don't know if that is possible with the FJR.

 
Are you sure it's the key and not the ignition switch that's causing your problem??? :glare:

 
+1 to the ignition switch possibly being the problem. Does the 'worn out' key work ok in the bags?

If you are the original owner, your keys should have come with a key identification tag with a number stamped on it. This number can be used to have new keys made. If you aren't the original owner, the Owner's Manual has a page where the key identification number, VIN and model information are supposed to be recorded. Did the original owner fill out this information?

There is a good chance that a dealer can find your key identification number when he looks up your VIN.

The details may be a bit jumbled but the team effort moves forward building on past suggestions. Next thing you know some wild man will suggest spray cleaning the ignition switch. If that doesn't fix the problem then the ignition switch can be taken apart and the tumblers as well as the electrical contacts can be inspected. I keep faintly hearing Brody -- Brody -- Brody. I wonder what a locksmith would have to say...

If the problem is the ignition switch tumblers a new set can be keyed to match the original ignition key. The tumblers from the seat lock could be moved into the ignition switch. In any case, a couple of new keys would be a good idea.

If the problem is the electrical contact part of the switch it can be replaced while retaining the original key.

Alan I have the spare hard bag lock that came with the bike. Can I "swap" that into the ignition switch. I had bought a replacement for mine when the oem one quit. Now I have a new one (recall kit) on the way from Gary M. I threw out the orig. one long ago. Sorry for the hijack.
