After my $280 speeding ticket I think it's time to buy one. I did a couple searches but the threads I came up with were dated.

So, Best one? I don't care if it's not bike specific, I can always stick it in something like an otter box.

This should probably go into NERPT.

And that should embarrass you slightly. At least ASPIRE to not be moved to NEPRT! Every time an admin has to move your thread....a puppy dies.

Really? Less than two weeks is dated? Mmmmkay.

I use the Escort 8500 X50 and have been saved many times thanks to its excellent range and selectiveness against false signals. If I could have any unit on the market, I would probably get the Escort 9500iX which adds the GPS functions to eliminate false signals and to warn of red light and speed cameras. I do have those in my GPS so it's just overlap to the 8500. Between the Escort and Valentine units, you're talking the top of the market and best detection available.

Keep in mind nothing will save you from being clocked and speed detection other than radar, and there is increasing use of LIDAR which reduces your opportunity for advanced warning. Radar and laser jammers and active devices are kind of a different animal. I'm sure they will be mentioned. Good luck, and yes, the first ticket will more than pay for this preventive measure.

Oops we moved to NEPRT while posting :p

One more thought...if it is wet enough to put your RD in an Otterbox, will you really be speeding?

The one that saves your *** at the time is the best one :yahoo: . I have the Escort 8500 and before that I used a Cobra. Both served me well.

Best devices for avoiding speeding tickets:

I' was looking for actual long term user experience. The reviews I've read seem to point to the Eacort 9500ix as being the best. It's not cheap but neither are the tickets.

Good point about the otter box. Probably won't be speeding in the rain.

I have been an Escort true believer since '83. Been saved many times, even from LIDAR once or twice.

I now have a 9500 and an 8500. Best bang for the buck is a reconditioned 8500 bought from Escort. 9500 features are great though.

Somebody out there makes a waterproof case specifically for the 8500.

If only you had asked that actual question instead of the one you did. ;) It would have been far less NEPRT-likely. Maybe next time you'll ask it and won't kill this guy.

Marty,

Hard to beat a Valentine One. I ran that setup on my bikes for years and combined with common sense and some knowledge of radar, you will avoid the majority of tickets.

Definately would recommend that you pipe the audio output into a set of speaker earbuds. Do not rely on visual or unit speaker for warning or you might as well travel without.

PM me if you want more details on how I set mine up.

I've been using the Passport 9500 ix, mounted via Garauld's clutch reservoir mount, for about 2 years. It has saved me countless times. BUT, you still have to remain vigilant and not go more than about 10 over (or whatever the LEO's tolerate) in locations where the RD can't help you, like around curves, and over hills, etc. I got nailed by a county sheriff who didn't activate his RD until he saw me coming, and I was not paying attention 3 miles from home at the end of a 700 mile day! However, he did not issue me a citation, only a warning. Most of the county sheriffs around where I used to live would leave their radar on constantly, this one was an exception!

The 9500 ix ability to "filter" out false signals via GPS really makes it a winner. Make sure you incorporate an audio alert into your helmet.

Good Luck, Bob

Valentine One with the Valentine audio adapter and the Marc Parnes Visual Alert.

That installation is on an R1150GS, but you get the idea.

The ability of the V1 to 'place' the location of the radar unit and to count the number of radar signals is unequaled. Valentine will also upgrade the firmware of their units free for the life of the detector, which is outstanding.

I'm sold on the Gen 2 Adaptiv TPX Motorcycle Radar Detector...I believe it's as good as any Passport or Valentine. The Gen 1 unit pretty much sucked, but this puppy is great.

Vibration and Water proof, big buttons, audio out jack, visual alert out jack, and a lazer in for a jammer.

It's my unit of choice and in the last 2 years, only lazer has got me. Ka threat is eliminated if it's used properly.

So I have a J&M CB with 3mm plug input, and an amplirider with Zumo, TPX RD, and MP3 going in.

Sporto pointed out that Valentine no longer seems to offer the free firmware upgrades that they used to provide.

They will upgrade your old detector to the equal of their current model, but it comes at a price. I put in the serial numbers of my two (pretty old) units and they wanted $199 each to get them up to the latest spec, which is a pretty good deal, I suppose, but it's a far cry from free.

So - I stand corrected and now, you do too!

Pete

Thanks for the links. I got past the ad copy to this facebook review and read the LEO review of this unit, and was glad I got the X50.

John Hart · Lieutenant at City of McComb Police DepartmentJust sold my TPX 2.0 As a LEO, I was able to test this unit myself. I really liked the design and ease of use. The best thing about it was the waterproof design and the quick release mounting plate. I also purchased the car kit and wireless headset.BUT, the sensitivity to KA band was way behind the V1 and X50s I have owned. I took one 1000K trip with this unit as well as tested it a couple of times at work. I also used it twice in my personel vehicle on 2 recent trips. If you are on wide open interstate under right conditions you may get a 2-3 mile alert. But under normal circumstances your lucky to get a good alert 3/4 tp 1.25 miles. Also since most of us ride with earplugs, that made the wireless headset useless. I am going back to the X50 and just rig it for motorcycle use. You can but a great 5-LED visual alert the will more than get your attention. The minor pain of having to keep it in a ziplock bag on the bike is well worth the superior range and features. I would not reccomend this for serious long distance motorcycle gadget heads like me. I voiced my concerns to adaptiv tech with little concern on their part. If they ever get this unit to come even close to a X50 or V1 I will buy it again.Reply · 1 · Like · Follow Post · May 14 at 7:19pm
BTW, pretty ballsy review for a LEO using his real name and department.
