So it seems that the guys at Cycle World have nominated the BMW K1200GT the best Sport Tourer. They mention that a FJR was not available before the 06' voting deadline, aka. they didn't compare it to the BMW. They go on to say that they did think it would have mattered because the BMW is so good. I hope to both bikes at Lake George next week. I will give the board my feedback.

Opinions, needs and preferences will always vary.

For my likes and requirements, the FJR is the best sport tourer and I enjoy mine; thats the rating I go by. :D

Does this surprise anyone else but me? With all due respect to the magazines, they sometimes do some stupid ****. Last year one of them named the Triumph Speed triple the Naked Bike of the year, but the BMW K1200R the bike of the year. Think about it!

Got my Cycle World rag yesterday. They name the Beemer as the S/T of the year, and as BlueStreak points out, didn't have access to an '06 Feej.

I'm sure the BMW is a damn fine bike for those who have more money, want to be different, and can tolerate quirkiness.

Who cares? Really? The FJR was best Sport-Touring Bike for 2 years. The 1200GT has all the new "whiz-bang-gollee-gee" technology so let them have their day. Only time will tell which is the best or which is better for which style of riding or personality of the owner. In the end it really doesn't matter as I don't need Cycle World or any other magazine to justify my purchase. I bought the best bike for me (twice) and have never looked back.

Cant you buy 2 FJR's for the price of 1 BMW and a years worth of expensive service!!! :p

Todd

It was pretty funny the way they worded it. Something like the FJR wasn't ready in time, but we didn't care, we're picking the GT anyway. Oh well.

ITYM 3 years (or maybe it was 4). Read enogh mags and it was chosen by someone each year since it hit the US.
Yeah, Mark, I was thinking that Cycle World picked the FJR 2 years in a row. IIRC Motorcyclist had picked it one year against some "weird" competition: Goldwings, 1200LTs etc. were all lumped together with RTs, Futura, Triumph Sprint, Honda ST, etc. I seem to remember quite a thread on the other board about their choices for competition. That may be the same year someone had a pillion rider voice her choice: The FJR.

Well, for $4000.00 more, it better be better. Will it go 200 mph? That might be worth an extra 4 jumbo to me. :D
Try $8K more. The only GTs for sale in the US at this time are outfitted such that they list for $20,385 and there is no dealing on that price. It's a hell of a bike but no way is ESA and cruise worth $8K and I'm a beemer guy at heart :D

Add to the equation the sucky dealer network and outragous maintenance costs and you have a much higher TCO for the GT. And don't get me started on the servo brakes and very dicey rear drive history BMWs throwing down lately...

You've got the breakdown all wrong. It's $500 for the cruise control, $1500 for the ESA, and $6000 for the BMW badge.

+1 :yahoo: :yahoo:

I think Cycle World only has so many bikes to choose from each year and they don't want to step on too many toes in their voting. So they have to keep everybody happy who reads and sponsors their mag. Oh it would be so boring if they chose the same bike year after year. Like mentioned before, the price tag and maintainence is the real issue. Sure the Beamer is a good bike but bang for the buck I'll take the good ole FJR anyday. Thats my $0.02 vote and I'll stand by it. Eagan eat your heart out. PM. <>< :D

I haven't seen the CycleWorld issue but if they are picking "Bike of the Year", that selection is limited to new models. The FJR AE would probably be considered to be a new model, the FJR A would not. When they are selecting "Best" by class, then all models are considered.

I agree with MM2, who cares? The FJR in my garage isn't transformed into anything better just because some magazine picks it as best something, and it is still the same bike even if some other magazine thinks a new BMW is pretty.

Like the old saying goes... "Opinions are like ********... everyone's got one... and some smell more than others."

My winner as the "Best Sport Tourer" for '06.... is sitting in my garage waiting for me to flush the radiator... ;)

and $6000 for the BMW badge
It's known as a "Roundel" - it needs a marketing title before its 6K price can be justified in hype!
Six large for THIS????
