I know there are some of you roadies out there. I am in need of a new wheelset for my road bike. I currently hace the Ksyrium SSls. They have lots of miles on them and I think they ae giving up the ghost. I have had a rash of broken spokes lately. Anyway, what do you you guys use? Tell me how you like the wheelset you have and how long they have lasted.

Thanks,

Rick

I never thought I'd be having THIS discussion on this site, but cool anyway.

I have two sets of Ksyrium SSC wheels. One for racing, and one for everyday use on my Felt F15 (they came with it). I had a spoke issue this year as well, but the wheel is repaired now. I crashed in July - coming down a hill at about 30 MPH and had to dodge a running dog / friend in front of me and ended up high-siding and flipping. The rear wheel slid right, then left, then right again before I lost it, and I ended up riding it home for about 8-10 miles with 2 or 3 broken spokes.

I would probably get another set of Ksyriums because I love the performance and strength, and they are so common now pretty much any shop can fix them if needed. I was having a chat with a guy on a ride who was trying to decide on these or Rolfs and I told him I would rather have wheels that could be quickly fixed from the guy down the street as opposed to having to drive an hour.

One thing I wonder from what you said is about you needing to replace them due to the spokes, are the rims and/or hubs still in good shape? If so, I say have a good shop check them out and replace any needed spokes - still WAY cheeper than new wheels.

Good luck!

I average 170lbs. and have 6000 miles on my Rolf Vector Comps. I can't believe how well they held up and stayed so true with so few spokes (18 front/20 rear).

The back rim cracked a while back. I had it replaced. The hub seems to be in decent shape. I back this set back in '03, I think. It just seems odd that I've had so many spokes break in such a short amount of time. I had some extras lying around and installed them myself, but I am begining to wonder if they are going to hold up. The last thing I want to do is go down because of a wheel failure. I have over 10,000 this year alone. Then add in the previous two years worth of use. Hmmm.

I work full time (at least), and was riding my bicycles about 100-200 miles a week. Then I bought my FJR. Now I'm getting chubby. But the good news is next year, for the Jiminy Peak Road Race which my club organizes and runs I get to be a motorcycle martial! The race is the first Saturday of May in Western Mass. - so it's too hard to get into good racing shape by then anyway.
