I am extremely saddened to hear about this. Being a couple of hundred miles away from there, it is a popular school for this area. I've got a friend w/ 2 kids that attend that school. At least I THINK that they go to college, there. I'm waiting to hear back from her that her girls are safe.

I wonder, what in the hell goes on in some people's heads.

God bless those killed & the family & friends that remain.

Such senselessness in such a beautiful place.

Have had and have many former students in school there.

Pray for Blacksburg y'all.

+2 Very Sad for all involved.

Senseless. What a dark day.

There is little I can say beyond I hope that the families can someday get over this, but that is doubtful.

Beyond imagining.

We must do a better job of helping out those who show signs of anti-social behaviour. There are indicators, but they get ignored. Mental illnesses are the boiling, untreated cancers of too many people.

Deepest condolences and prayers for those affected, and, for the love of God, help for the up-and-comers who will repeat this if left to their own devices.

There was an article on our news yesterday, before this terrible news broke. It was about a woman whose daughter was stabbed to death for no reason by a psychiatric patient who possibly should not have been on the streets. The call was being made for people to be locked up if they show signs of being dangerous.

Thankfully we can only stab each other and guns are not as easy to get hold of since the Dunblain massacre.

Condolences to all involved. None of the families will ever get over it. How many lives have been wrecked by this?

Does anybody else feel kinda numb and detached from news like this anymore?

Columbine was shocking, 9-11 way more so, Katrina, etc...It seems like it's going to take a nuclear catastrophe to get my undivided attention for a while.

Is it just me, or has tragedy become commonplace?

I'd better go ask a therapist....

I will not discuss politics, I will not discuss politics, I will not discuss politics....

When I first saw this on the tube I was saddened and pissed off at the gunman, I said a quick prayer, shed a quick tear and felt like it is becoming more commonplace these days.

What I wonder is why several students did not rush the guy and put him down? He was killing anyone anyway, why did they not try to stop him?

First, I wish all the family and friends of those involved my sympathy.

I have wondered the same thing with this tragedy and many others. Even on 9-11, it seems only the passengers on a single plane rushed the bad guy(s). Yes, there are many people who would have rushed the gunmen if they were in the room. However, it seem to me today more and more people are raised a little different and would not risk personal death or safety for others.

Why don’t we lock people like this up? Politics!!! I am not trying to start a political conversation here. My stepbrother (14 years younger) has a few problems up-stairs, goes off the deep and once or twice a year, and goes on a destructive rampage. In my opinion, he needs help to make sure he does not hurt someone. However, his mother (my stepmother who is a freak) stands up for his rights to prevent any type of help he does not request. I am told that since he is in control of his action he is considered “mentally handicapped.” Law enforcement cannot treat “mentally handicapped” any different then the rest of us. If the “mentally handicapped” refuse help, there is nothing they can do. They cannot violate the rights of someone who is handicapped.

Do I agree with this? No, I do not, if someone poses a risk the general population something needs to be done. However, I do understand the other side of the argument. Just because someone is handicapped we cannot force him or her to receive help.

I do not want to start a political conversation here. I am just shedding light on the reason people with issues such as this are still on the street.

Hard to say without having been there, but I would rather go down swinging than like a lamb at the slaughterhouse.

I'd sure hate to be in the shoes of that police chief right about now....

the comment made about this subject this morning was that in the shock of the situation people think, if I run he shoot's me in the back, if I rush him he will shoot me. Maybe if I stand still he will stop shooting before he gets to me.

Can't imagine what I would do in the same situation.

Another sick tragedy for our nation.

Now it's time for all the armchair quarterbacks in the media to try and find someone besides the shooter to blame.

Each of the dead did what they thought would preserve their life. They didn't know the shooter's intentions or maybe his recent past actions. Why do some animals "freeze" motionless...they are trying not to draw attention to themselves.

I agree with the "go down swinging" part...however, only the victims on Flight 93 in Pennsylvania truly knew the intentions of their captors...so they took action. Usually, our optimism that somehow "all will work out for us as individuals" if we just "keep low" combined with our seeming lack of capacity to affect the situation prevents most from taking action.

Just my thoughts. Prayers sent for the slaughtered... :(

Since we are free to talk about guns and police - this should be ok.

I am not a police officer, and I cannot fully comprehend what they are subjected to. However it looks very bad to see video of LEOs hiding behind trees and cars while shots are being fired. I can understand that there might of been under orders to secure a position, but nonetheless - it looks bad.

My daughter is away at Ball State, and the thought of students being trapped in a classroom with a shooter while the police wait outside is bewildering at best. The guy shot himself - the cops never got into the room with him until he was dead.

The campus was already crawling with police as the first incident happened 2 hours earlier. So response time should of been Nil.

The corner said most of the victims had 3+ bullets in them. That means that they guy had to have about a dozen or so clips. Reloading takes no time, but all of those officers with vests and assault rifles hiding behind cars and trees is ********. Maybe they were rushing the perp, but we can only see crowd control from the camera angle. There should be some interesting information coming out of this. If 911 taught us anything it is that we cannot wait to respond.

And to talk about unarmed and untrained 20 year olds taking action while the highly trained and armed police wait outside? ********.

Maybe they will learn something from this, but we have heard this refrain all too much lately.

It is ridiculous to speculate why didn't someone do this or that. Unless you have been in a situation similar to this, you do not know how you will react. You may think that you will act a certain way, but you never really know.

Hindsight bias, sometimes called the I-knew-it-all-along effect, is the inclination to see events that have occurred as more predictable than they in fact were before they took place.

This is why it has been eliminated in reviewing police actions.

I believe our efforts are better served offering support and prayers for all the victim's and their families and friends.

Does anybody else feel kinda numb and detached from news like this anymore?
Yes, and that in and of itself disturbs me. I kinda diminishes the reality of it all.

What I wonder is why several students did not rush the guy and put him down?
I thought the same thing then felt guilty for being critical.

I guess there's just a lot of things in this ole world I just don't understand. I probably never will.

As a Va Tech undergrad and grad engineering student, I'm still numb from shock... I took quite a few classes in Norris Hall... that's where I did my Masters work. I still can't imagine the circumstances that would lead somebody to do something like this... and I can't comprehend what pain the parents of the victims are going through...

One thing that struck me, was that because of the policy in place on campus, the gunman knew there would be nobody armed in the classrooms... like lambs to the slaughter.

:(
