Does anyone have the accurate infromation regarding the BRP bypass speed limit. the park service infromation sounds like the reduced speed limit is for about 20mi, however they say the bypass is about 500 ft. I am going that way on the 24th of this month and I don't want the try to ride 20mi at 15 mph. Thanks for your input. Sorry I am going to miss the EOM on the 20th.

General Parkway Speed is 45mph. Some sections like around Blowing Rock, NC are posted at 35mph. The temp bypass around Mt. Mitchell @ milepost 374 is 15mph.

The 21-mile section of the Blue Ridge Parkway from Milepost 376 at Ox Creek Road to Milepost 355 at Mt. Mitchell State Park is now open. The speed limit has been reduced to 15 mph in this area and will be strictly enforced. This section will close again in November 2013 so that permanent repairs can be made. 21 miles @ 15 mph?!?

With the leaves starting to change color, the effective speed limit will probably be less than 10 mph.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but the Park Service news release https://www.nps.gov/blri/parknews/opening-of-temporary-bypass-at-milepost-374.htm appears to only apply the 15 mph limit to the 500 ft. bypass. Also, the real time road closure map https://maps.nps.gov/blri/road-closures/ is not showing any advisory for that area. I've seen this situation exist on the Parkway several times before (most recently between the Rt. 191 and Rt. 151 intersections a few years back) and the Park Service has never before limited speed except in the area where construction/repairs was going on. Hard to imagine they'd drastically limit speed unnecessarily for a 21 mile stretch with leaf peeping season almost here. I'll be riding that stretch southbound next Monday; guess I'll find out then.

Lonerider, If you have a chance, would appreciate an up date on the 15mph speed limit, when you ride that section on Monday. Or any one else that will be traveling that way next week.

any update on the length of the 15mph section?

i tried calling the park services and did not get a real person to talk to. every website i checked did not clairfy if its 21-miles or just the 500-ft bypass.

UPDATE: fianlly spoke with a real person, she said the 15-mph limit is only for 500 feet.
As I thought; this situation has existed before on the Parkway. Some years back, heavy rains caused four sections of road between Crabtree Falls and Craggy Gardens to drop downhill when the ground gave way beneath it. When they got it repaired to the point of temporary lane openings, the only lower limits were in the areas of the repairs. Considering the harsh environment much of that road is in, the Park Service does a pretty good job of keeping it maintained, IMHO. I'll be riding through that section Monday; if the situation is any different, I'll post it as soon as I get internet service.
