"RA 'n da U.P, you betcha!

Houghton, MI

June 19-22, 2008

A Welcome from your 2008 Rally Chair: Bob Alexander

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is commonly referred to as the "U.P." Its residents are affectionately known as "Yoopers" (UP ers). Yoopers may also refer to the "Trolls", those Michigan residents that live 'Under da Bridge' in the Lower Peninsula and that bridge being the Mackinac which just celebrated its 50th Birthday. Even though I've lived and spent most of my 54 years in the north, I'm still a Troll, being a Yooper is a birthright.

This summer the RA will hold the International Rally 'n da UP and more specifically, the "Copper Country" in Houghton, Michigan. Houghton is about half-way up that finger of land that juts out into Lake Superior. The UP is about 350 miles long and 100 miles wide and is motorcyclists' paradise, especially in the Copper Country and western UP. Touching on four of the five Great Lakes, the two land areas of Michigan give the state a shoreline of 3,288 miles, second in length only to Alaska, which creates some great riding opportunities.

Although born & raised in Detroit (Troll), I came to da UP to attend Michigan Tech 35 years ago. I learn to ride my first bike CB350 'n da UP 34 years ago. I bought my 1st BMW (R90S) when I graduated from da UP University 31 years ago. I married my 1st and only wife (Mary Beth) who is from da UP (Yooper) 6 years ago and we now live close to da UP outside of Hurley, Wisconsin. As you can see, I've got a special connection to da UP, and have spent many days enjoying this land, its roads, and the people.

I've been touring on bikes, primarily BMWs, for 34 years both in North America and abroad. I'm an AMA member, MSF Instructor, and RA member for 18 years. Why da UP? Well I've enjoyed rallies both International and at the Club level since my first in 1977. I've helped out at many of those rallies and have organized a few smaller gatherings. Last summer at the Biltmore I started thinking "Why not the UP?" I knew retirement was near and after spending a little time exploring the options, Michigan Tech and the Copper Country came through and offered a great rally venue. After a visit north by Debbi Harbour, she supported the proposed site and with a little arm twisting I agreed to chair the rally. I guess it's my turn to give back. Now it's your turn to enjoy da UP and the Copper Country, the place I've been bragging about for years!

The rally site will be the athletic complex of the University which is situated a 1/2 mile up a hill above the main campus. The main campus sits on the banks of Portage Lake about a mile east of downtown Houghton. Rally Central is the large Gates Tennis Center (Bldg. 50) which will be used for food, bar, and entertainment activities. The Student Development Complex (Bldg. 24) is located a few hundred feet away and will be used for seminars, indoor vendors and bathrooms/showers. Yes, no shower trailers needed! The complex also has two indoors pools and large fitness center that can be used for a group rate fee of $3/day. The Ice Arena will be used for our closing ceremonies.

For riders who have explored da UP and the Copper Country you're familiar with those twisty shoreline routes of the Keweenaw, the Porcupine Mountains and "Lake of the Clouds", Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Tahquamenon Falls, and more! For those who haven't, it's your turn to experience my backyard!

Try the RA Rally.

Most folks just care that you ride, not what you ride.

Well that doesn't explain the number of Beemers I saw during the week in Central/Northern Ontario. Honest to god, out of perhaps 50 bikes I saw 20 of them were Beemers. They were even riding in small groups. Must've been something going on this way too.

Oh BTW, I've officially seen the biggest windshield ever put on a motorycle on Beemer following me in the rain. GINOURMOUS!
