As with a few other maturing forum members I am taking long looks at bike weights. Sold the 923lb 1800 and replaced it with a 505lb V-Strom 1000, now I am looking(long term) at the 520lb Beemer r1200rs cause it has shaft drive and relatively light weight compared to my (much loved) 660lb FJR. Not fond of bmw dealers and service but am looking for comments on just the bike itself. Thanks.

I did 24K miles in the last 14 months. I too had to make that choice to go lighter and for a seat that is not as wide, so it's easer to reach the ground. I very much like the way the RS handles. Yes service at dealers is somewhat higher, but I will do most of my own service after the warranty period. I'm coming off of 5 FJR's and at this point have NO regrets getting the RS, and it's the best bike for me at this time of my old age.

1200RS had been one of my long time favorites and almost bought one eariler this year.

Being former BMW rider, I too dislike my BMW dealer so that's a strike against it.

What I've noticed is a more cramped riding position than the FJR otherwise a nice bike.

I do like their lighter saddlebags.

I still like the FJR better, plus I don't have to visit a dealer as often.

I would probably dislike my Yamaha dealership too, except I've never been there except when I paid them for my bike and picked it up. I think BMW dealerships could be treated the same way, if you're handy with a few tools.
