I phoned my mum in the U.K tonight. I could hear the fireworks going off in the background.

We have much to be grateful to Guy Fawkes for. Such as your use of "guy" to describe him. I recently learned he's why we call a guy--a guy. Used to refer to the effigy they'd dress up in rags and burn on Guy Fawkes night--the "Guy." Then it became any raggedy tramp or bum. And now, we use the term to refer to any old guy. Even Old Michael.
