Can anyone familiar with that area tell me what I can expect for weather in Sept? Not having much experience with that part of the country it would be helpful to know. Is it still blistering hot or is it more moderate being in the mountains? High winds? Rainy? I just want to know what to expect so I can pack accordingly.

Typically it's a few degrees cooler than the national average there, being in the higher elevation. If it gets to the 90's, expect a regular afternoon thundershower as the air crosses over the mountians, which usually only lasts a half hour or so.

Pleasant nights for kicking tires in the parking lot.

Axeman, until someone more familiar with the area responds (I was there only once in the spring and it was windy and cool), here's some statistical Wx info for you

Remember it's elevation is 3,300ft

Have a great trip (I'll be in the area myself in about a week from now B) )

Stef

Thanks for the link Stef. According to the chart it looks downright pleasant for riding. I didn't think I was going to be able to go but things are beginning to look better for those dates.

Slap, I'll register as soon as I know matter-of-factly that I can come. The only bad thing is I may have to miss the cutoff date for securing a hotel room so hopefully something will be available close by.

The August 7th date is only when our un-used rooms are opened back up to public availability. That doesn't mean they won't be available, but chances start going down rapidly from there.

Are you insinuating I lie?!?
Calm down, Slappy! In the old days when I went backpacking in the mountains of Colorado...hmmmm! I think that was the Spring of '08...we used to say the trip would be a bunch of guys "sittin' around a campfire, sippin' Crown Royal and tellin' lies." I suspect EOM might be much of the same sans campfire.

Your "kickin' the tires" comment reminded me of that...

Buddy of mine used to use that expression, too. :D In fact, we'll be riding over to the mountains together next week...

If that bottle of CR is still around there'll be some more lyin' I reckon...

hey slap -- didn't know you were in Johnson City... my mom's family is in Mountain City. Next time I head up thataway, maybe we could have a cold bev., and ride through Shady Valley or something.

what's the happenings in Boone in Sept? (curious -- wouldn't party crash or anything like that)

Believe me, there is no shortage of motel rooms in Boone. If you don't get one in the EOM place, there are a ton of them all around it. The leaf-lookers are not out in force yet in Sept. I have a house in Boone and spend most of Sept., Oct., and Nov. up there. The weather in Sept. can be an iffy thing. Cooler temps are starting to set in throughout the high country by then...mostly early in the morning and, later, toward the evening. Daytime temps are usually perfect for riding. You will want to have some warmer wraps with you because , at some point in the day, you will need them. Rain is spotty during Sept. and good rain gear is a must...it can be sunshine in one valley and pouring rain in the next. One thing is certain, however. For those of you who have not been to the Boone area, the good roads that abound are going to blow your mind.

Me and Brazos Parker both are in Johnson City! Let us know when you'll be in the area.

The EOM (eastern owners meeting) is being held in Boone this year. Check out the meetings & events section of the forum for details. Sept. 8-10.

Good info. Thanks

As a kid, I didn't know I was raised in the NC mountains. I just knew I didn't live at the beach! :(

Sep. weather patterns can be very iffy. Weather cycles are usually a 3-5 day increment. Mostly has to do with whether or not there are any tropical depressions/hurricanes winding down over the NC mountains at the time.

Here's the link for Weather.com for Boone.

Boone, NC Weather by the month

If the weather turns hot we can play in a creek (I'll bring my fly rod).

If the weather turns cold we can burn a Harley, or roast marshmallows over my 05 tank.
