Friday morning, left Rochester (Mn) around 8:45 AM, with the intention of a fun ride, while taking a few photos, and scuffing in a new rear PR2. The weather was decent, except for some haze in the air from the big forest fire in Northern Saskatchewan. Headed north out of Rochester, and took the standard route to Wabasha.....you locals know it well. 63 North, County 11 to Hammond, County 6 North to Highway 60, and on to Wabasha. I took the obligatory photo at the scenic overlook on Hwy 60, but it's not as good as in the past. The reason is that a couple of years ago, an unfortunate (and maybe unskilled, inexperienced, or inebriated....maybe all the above?) motorcyclist failed to negotiate the curve at the overlook, and rider and motorcycle punched a gap in the 2-foot tall limestone wall that used to border the pavement. The impact was probably not good for the well-being of the bike or rider, but it caused the demise of the limestone wall. Instead of fixing it, the people responsible decided to erect a small wall out of these ugly concrete barriers.

Crossed the Mississippi, took 25 north out of Nelson, and, to make it simple, here's the route I took to my lunch destination in Fountain City.

Rode down the hill to The Golden Frog in Fountain City.

Mmmmm, lunch special. Haddock, red taters, cole slaw, and 1919 root beer on tap. Sorry, no pie.

Crossed the river to Winona to pick up a couple of oil filters at the Yamaha shop. Guy at the parts counter shuffled through them, and only found one. Then he says "That bike's not very popular around here". Apparently, he's something of a dim bulb. Back across the river into Wisconsin, and the following roads.....

Back to Wabasha, and home by 2:30 for a wash, wax, and oil change. A couple more shots to summarize the day.

Looking north up County C, one of my favorite sections of road.

Waumandee House Bar and Restaurant in Waumandee. Treat yourself to a Schmidtknecht burger. You won't regret it.

One last shot. Waumandee.

I know this was boring, but I wanted to try a trip report once. What a pain in the donkey to stop and take pictures! But mid-winter, I guess I can look at these and daydream about nice riding weather. The rear PR2 scuffed in nicely, with no scarey moments. Saw 3 deer, several turkeys, some geese, and one fox that bolted across in front of me. Hope you Wisconsin and Minnesota riders enjoyed it, and recognized some of the roads. See you out there!

Added more detail below on Tuesday, June 29......for any local riders who care. Oh, and I did this short ride on FRIDAY, JUNE 25th, not Saturday. Route details below. All mileages are gross estimations.

NW Rochester to Kwik Trip in Wabasha via US Hwy 63 north, right on Wabasha County 11 to Hammond, left on Cty 6, right on Mn Hwy 60 to Wabasha. Distance; about 45 miles.

Crossed Mississippi....straight though Nelson on Wi Hwy 25/35.

---Right on Cty D, about 4 miles.

---Right on Cty I, about 3 miles.

---Straight on Cty II, about 4 miles.

---Right on Wi 37, about 2-1/2 miles.

---Left on Cty S, about 5 miles. Photo taken on S, which has a very fun twisty valley section.

DSC01426.jpg

---Left on Cty N, about 3 miles.

---Right on Cty T, about 1-1/2 miles.

---Right on Wi 88, about 3 miles.

---Left on Cty XX, about 6 miles.

---Right on Cty U, about 8 miles.

---Left on Cty E, about 7 miles.

---Right on Wi 95, about 4 miles.

---Right on Cty G, about 8 miles. Great road, and I have a cool picture, but just found out it's still in the fecking camera, and I haven't downloaded it yet. There is a church that sticks out into the road, making the road zigzag around the front doors. I call it the Peekaboo church, because you can look through the windows, and see the road on the other side, to check for oncoming traffic. I think it's called the Eagle Valley Church. Poop, I'll have to edit this later and add the photo.

OK, I found the photo......here's the Peekaboo Church.

---Right on Wi 95, down into Fountain City. Lunch at the Golden Frog, which is at the intersection of 95 and 35, at the stop sign on the bottom of the hill.

After my little Winona side trip, I crossed back over the river, and went....

---Right on Wi 35, about 1 mile.

---Left on Cty M, about 6 miles.

---Left on Wi 95, about 2 miles.

---Right on Cty G (again), about 8 miles.

---Left on Wi 95, about 7 miles.

---Left on Cty C, about 10 miles.

---Right on Cty U, 5 miles.

---Right on Wi 88, about 4 miles. 88 takes a real sharp right, just before Gilmanton. At this turn, I went....

---Straight on Sand Road, about 1 mile.

---Left on Cty B, across Wi 37, about 2 miles.

---Straight on Cty D, about 10 miles.

---Left on Cty F, about 4 miles.

---Straight on KK, about 1 mile.

---Left on Brownell Road, about 3 miles.

---Left on Cty D back to Hwy 25/35 and Nelson.

Total mileage from Rochester was about 236 miles, according to the highly inaccurate odometer. Not very exciting text, but wanted to give any local FJRs the route, just in case. :)

Great report, thanks!

I love the county road signs, I guess you really have to know your way around

NOT boring at all, loved the road signs...and love riding WI. I don't usually get that far north...but will use your guided tour to help me on a future trip.

My boy is itching to get a dad/son XJ600/FJR1300 overnight trip in soon. You know I'M itching to get my bike back on the road to help scratch that itch that he and I both have. Getting out and seeing him enjoy the roads and sport-touring!

As soon as I can get in the new stator, get some new tires on his bike, and get some preliminary trips to northwestern Illinois ...we are hitting the road to WI. :yahoo:

Thanks for the report...LOVED it. :clapping:

Thanks a lot, Joe.....very nice of you to comment. OK, here's one more. County N, just south of the intersection with County T.

Thanks for the report, lots of GREEN. We're not used to that color here in SW Utah! We've got lots of other colors, but not too much of that one.

Nice write up! Looks like a great ride - lots of beautiful country 2-lane - my kinda riding.

If you like fish and chips for lunch, I cordially invite you here to Maine. IMHO we have some of the best and freshest fish and chips to be found. If you make it out this way, look for the small locally owned diners / restaurants / shacks near the coast. It will come as no surprise that they typically have the best seafood.

For local microbrews when in Maine, try one of the Shipyard, Geary's or Gritty's flavors. Good stuff to wash lunch down.

Thanks for the report and pics. Far from boring. Looks like some fun roads to ride on. Funny how they named their counties A, B, C, and so on...

And yes, I know the feeling when you say its a pain to have to stop and take pics. :)

Actually, the counties have regular names. But the county roads in Wisconsin have letter designations like P, or M, or ... instead of number designations. And some adjacent counties may have a road called County P, but they might be different roads. So it can be interesting :)

Great report! I know all those roads well. Hoping to get over that direction on the 4th. Hwy 60 is really nice since the repaving. Keep up the good work.

Nice report! Retracing my old stomping grounds, and some of the roads I was on just a couple of weeks ago. I noticed the wall was gone.... now I know what happened to it. Thanks.
