I got a 2007 FJR month ago (1100 miles now) and I love the bike except by the fact that is being hard to ride (control it) at lower speeds or in traffic.

The engine does not have clean and progressive acceleration bellow 3000 rpm and the engine/pipes pops, sounding like valves out of adjustment or bad sparks. I suspect the throttle body is out of sync or alignment.

For example if try keep it in 1500 or even 2500 rpm steady it just don't stay....the rpm varies above and bellow even if I keep holding the throttle in the same position.

This problem gets worse during in town riding or bumper to bumper situations, when I have to compensate with the clutch to avoid the exitation.

The dealer says it is normal and the mechanic did not want play with as he said it is normal for FJRs and takes time to do the alignment, and Yamaha would have to authorize the service. <_<

I just can't get it as a satisfactory answer, but I do not know anybody else with a FJR to compare and see if mine got a problem or not.

What do you folks think? Are your bikes smooth and clean from idle to regular speeds ?

I am going to call the dealer again, but I want have more feedback before I start a fight to fix the problem if, it is really a problem. :angry2:

UPDATE 07/16/2007 TO ADD A VIDEO CLIP LINK SHOWINHG THE PROBLEM:

I uploaded a video of my FJR's behavior in YouTube so I could better show you Folks the problem I am experimenting.

Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlT0OflZWjM

NEW UPDATE 07/21/07 Problem Still there <_<

Following directions from the Yamaha Customer Service, left the bike in the dealer again on 7/17/07.

Called the dealer this morning and they said the bike was good now, they found something (see my lastest post for details)

Got there quickly, started the bike, rode test it and still the same!!!

Not happy with the bike at all!!! :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

NEW UPDATE 09/03/07 <_<

The problem persisted and the bike is in the dealer since 8/20/07

The dealers reffered by Ionbean duplicated the problem, but apparently could not find the solution yet.

A Yamaha regional supervisor will go to the dealer in couple days to see the bike.

Yeah, you've got a problem. The dealer apparently does not know to cure the problem or doesn't care. Sounds like the TB is way out of sync, but there are many more capable people than me on this forum who may offer a solution. My bike has never had that problem (06 with 16,000 miles). Good luck.

Welcome to the Gen-2 club!

Lots of band-aids to help the 'surging', as it's known here (do a search).

A Power Commander (PC-III) is the cure (plain and simple)! IMHO, of course.

This is not normal behavior for a new FJR. The dealer should fix it. Sounds like it maybe time to start moving up the ladder (mechanic, service manager, owner, Yama Tech rep. etc.) Some surging is one thing but a continual studder or miss is another. You should be able to hold a consistant speed/RPM with a brand new FJR without a Power Commander or any other modification. Is the free play taken up in your throttle cable? Best of luck

Not everyone can afford a PC III. I'd try the cheaper route first... Barbarian jumper to even out the lean O2 & G2 throttle tube to take up the excessive throttle cable is probably a good start. The problems that you have described are common to the Gen 2 bikes. Search is your friend. Try searching 'surging'.

No, it is not normal and the answer you got is bullshite.

TB Sync is the number one thing I would do. Next I would call Yamaha or talk to a different dealer. Dont settle for less that perfect. It is a nice bike. THrottle snatch is normal (coming off idle and a "jerk" ans the gas comes on.) once off idle the bike should be FLAWLESS IMHO

If you are near Salt Lake, I will do one for you (no charge of course.) It only takes 20 minutes and I have done mine many times. Dont settle on a brandnew ride

Thanks RoadGlide. I smell TBS and a friend will help me with tomorrow. Lets see.

While the "lean surging" at low speed/rpm was common on the 06 it was no where near what you describe. I did experience some of the surging on my new 06 also but it wasn't dramatic enough to cause me concern whilst riding at slow speed. Just one of those things you deal with.

I would suggest at a minimum you do the Barbarian MOD and the center spring release which should not only smooth out your lean surging but give you a much easier throttle to grow accustomed to. The throttle spring should also help with the off/on throttle instant transition. Regardless, you're throttle inputs will become even much more controled and smooth as you ride this bike. It's an awesome machine.

Like the others have said, it doesn't sound like your bike falls into the normal catagory. Escalate it with the dealership (watch them do the TBS) do the two FREE and EASY MODS listed above and you'll love it even more.

Good Luck!

Thanks Hit the Road Jack, I won't be able to buy a PC-III right now, but I intend to do it next year, so I will try the other ways first.

I just think that besides this is a nice farkle, the bike should be able to run ok without it...specially a new bike!

Something else is wrong, it shouldn't be doing those things. Go over the dealers head if you have to, and I'd be wary of the service rendered by one that said the things this one did.

It sounds like something is screwing up the EFI mapping, I'd be looking for a disconnected sensor, (O2, MAF, engine temp). Any of these (and probably a few more) can lead to the fuel mapping being out-of-whack.

Thank you RonBB, the shudder is really anoying. I adjusted the free play but did not help a lot. I almost sure it needs a TBS.

I will try the TBS myself and if does not solve the problem, I will escalate the issue like you said as it is kind of unnaceptable behavior in a smooth bike like the FJR.

I'm fact I believe the results will be better doing it myself rather than leave with the dealer. thats why I wanna try first.

IMO you have way more than the standard lean fuel injector issues common to FJR's and other bikes. It also sound like a lot more than any "normal" new bike teething problem I ever saw. Yeh, I would recommend a PCIII but AFTER you get this situation under control. First thing I would do is call Yamaha and see what they will do. Second, I would be looking for a new dealer. It really sounds like an FI issue which could be a bad injector, bad sensor, bad ECU, or a whole laundry list of things that a reputable dealer should be able to sort out. Let me guess you are at one of those Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, KTM, GasGas, Ducati,Yamaha, etc dealers. If you are, start looking for some place that can really fix Yamaha's.

Why don't you fill out you profile so we will know where you live and maybe someone is in your area.

I agree, you have a problem and the dealer is stoopid

Thanks Luvtoride, I will definitively will try fix it without the PC-III.

A new bike should leave the dealer flawless, however this is not what happen in real world.

I searched surging and I am not have this problem or maybe I have a very mild version of it. :glare:

Cdogman I appreciate the TBS offer and it would be awesome, but I am in New Hampshire. :)

Luckily I have a friend coming tomorrow to help me up and I believe it will fix the problem!

Thank you!

Don't forget Yamaha had a recall on the Throttle Position Sensor, on earlier models. Its possible you got one that slipped through the cracks. Make them replace it.

The symptom typically addressed by the G-tube and barbarian mod is just an off-idle flat spot that probably wouldn't even be noticed if the motor didn't make so much power down low.

The TBS can cure a slight buzz in the bars, but that could be placebo as much as anything else (vibration is difficult to quantify, and after doing a sync you'll be mentally putting the thing under the microscope looking for improvement) Also, some folks are doing the TBS by adjusting the airscrews, others are doing it at the butterflies on the throttle bodies. I did my first TBS with the airscrews, but I think next time I'm going to null those out somehow and tune at the throttle bodies first.

In any case, the only folks I've seen posting with an issue as dramatic as yours have had high altitude as one of the variables.

One other thing came to mind...I remember a bike mag editor doing a LD ride on a KZ1300 a long time ago - the guy started in SoCal, rode to Colorado, and stopped to get it serviced. His impression up to that point was that the bike had a surplus of power.

The mechanic rode the thing and knew immediately that something was off. Turned out that the bike had a dead coil, and 2 cylinders out of the six weren't firing at all. After repair, the writer said the power went from surplus to OMFG-level.

I wonder if you might have a cylinder misfiring?
