Anybody know what the factory puts in the new bikes? Fossil, synthetic, or a blend? Which should I use for the 600 & 1000 services? When can I change to full synthetic? I know this will open a major debate, but which brand & weight is preferred?

Paul

Sorry, but I just can't resist.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess YamaLube 20w50.

This has been beat to death here, look under NERPT's for oil threads, lots of good reading & opinions.

I went to Rotella 15w40 at 500 (early) & same at 1k changes. Next change (4k) will be the Rotella 5w40 synthetic. This was based on what I have read here. There are as many who will agree as disagree here, it's the nature of the beast...

Hey don't use that crap!! It's been recalled due to excessive amounts of omega 3! Seems that stuff is corrosive and will eat yer engine.

Now this stuff?

Well it's the shit! Semi synthetic blend, fully organic, with a hint of lemon pepper to improve viscosity. Plus, it doubles as a differential lubricant :clapping:

Is it friday??

I doubt that...? I don't think the owner's manuals, in any of the markets where FJRs are sold, recco any oils that end in "50"?

The oils I've seen recco'd end in "40".

And, there are probably many 'Yamalubes'? -- there have been a couple iterations (different 'bottlers') in the U.S. since the introduction of the FJR.

If it is Yamalube on the factory fill?, it would probably be the one they sell in Japan...?

This was new to me as well, because my '04's manual stated 20w40. If you take a look at yamaha.com, you see that there is no 20w40 offered any more, and I believe there was a thread here about it.

This is a scanned page from the owner's manual of my '09, which recommends API SG or JASO MA or higher grade 20w-50:

This is from the Yamaha website:

Just completed my break in service on my '09 and the 20w-50 Yamalube is what my dealer told me to use.

Today I changed my oil. Went from Yamalube 10w40 because the yamalube 20-50 is no more, to the very priceeee yamalube 15w-50 synthetic. Firing up my bike three feet from the garage wall before changing the oil warming it up and hereing every sound the engine makesl Then went for a 5 mile ride. Bike sounded great shifted normal smooth ect. I came back changed the oil with the new synthetic. I fired it up and I am not kidding the engine was much quiter!! This is not wishfull thinking really. I did not expect this. I went for a ride shifted even smoother. Rode around the block with helmet off' I know thats stupid" to here the engine, much quiter. Parked it next to the wall in garage running "engine much quiter". I really wish I recorded it before and after.

OK, I happen to teed off for a reason that is obvious if you read some of my other posts, so pardon my attitude, but WHO CARES?

If you are following Yamaha's recommended break-in you will use whatever it is that the bike comes with. After 600 miles you drain it and follow the book. So WHO CARES?

Gen-I bikes are already broken in, so WHO CARES what they specified back then?

New bike specs say 20W-50. But buy a motor oil that high in Zinc - something specifically designed for bikes. They impose some fairly unique conditions and need oil designed for them.

I personally don't use synthetic oil because the real killer of bikes is particulates in the oil system - the only way to get rid of particulates is to change your oil - and since I'm doing that every 5,000 km, spending 2-3 times as much for synthetic is a waste because I'm not getting 2-3 times the use.

Up here in Kanada I like Castrol and the only Castrol bike specific oil they sell is 'Grand Prix'. That's what I use.

At least the thread seems to have started in the right forum: NEPRT

on my '04 observed the same thing,

I change ~2000 miles using 15W-40 Shell Rotella.

Difference is old oil vs. new oil.

"I personally don't use synthetic oil because the real killer of bikes is particulates in the oil system "

WHAT??? If that was true, we would only do filter changes most often and oil changes less. Maybe you need to find a better oil filter. The real killer in any engine is the breakdown of viscosity of the oil. Without sufficient viscosity, the oil can't form a barrier between moving metal parts. Synthetics hold viscosity better and longer especially in high heat applications (like a performance motorcycle engine)

MamaYama reccos oil filter (filters particulates) changes only every other oil change -- every 8,000 ~ 12,000 miles, depending on market.

WHAT, how can that be what with all the particulates clogging up the oil system and killing engines....</sarcasm>

Oh wait...they sell more bikes that way </sarcastic conspiricy theory>
