the salesman told me not to rev over 4500 until 600 miles, the manual don't hold constant rev's above 4500 for an extended period of time.

any thoughts ?

Break it for my FJR1300 is like any other bike i have owned. Change the Revs alot, be nice to it, shift alot. Try to stay away from constant speeds. Ride the bike, reving it and going through the gear. Be cool to it let it cool down after a good ride. I always decide on areas were I can really ride the bike and not stay in traffic. The FJR eats up alot of road so take it out were you can give it a work out and still be nice to it. I think that 4500 rev stuff are good guide lines but I would not freak out if you rev it a little past it. AND CHANGE THE OIL IN THE CRANK CASE AND REAR END AT THE RECOMMENDED 600 or less miles. I did mine at 532 miles, every thing looked normal. You will notice the rear oil will be black, I suspect some kind of break in moly is in that gear oil to lap the gears.

 
There are several schools of thought about break-in. Modern bikes are built to much higher tolerances than older '60s machines. (Cylinder walls are coated, for example). And motors are revved to the red line at the factory.

The manual does say to not keep the RPMs constant and that you should not sustain full throttle operation above 4500 RPM for the first 'n' miles, to allow ring surfaces to hone out and gear faces to mate and polish.

Some suggest that the 'ride it like you stole it' approach works best because the actual cylinder break-in mostly takes place in the first couple-of-ten miles. So the say to run it fairly hard for 25 miles, let it cool off completely. Do it again, then change the oils and it's over. Again at 600.

Never had issues doing it that way, but I tend to change my oil every 1500 miles and the rear oil every 4500.

Were is HOT HERE. It can't be as hot as Lake Havasu today. It cooled down to 114 today. I can ownly stand riding right before sun up when its ownly 90. But the fall is coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW -- usually following all the debate, an experienced long-time mechanic will chime in that they've never seen issues with motors due to improper break-in (if you follow the manual) -- the "Moto-Man" Clicky break-in process is debated much, but note that the web-site says you wouldn't be voilating the owners manuals recommended break-in procedure.
