I've been searching since the days of walkmans for the perfect earbuds for riding. Tried most all, including a custom molded pair. The E6i's I had for a while were best I'd found up until a couple years ago when I cam across the MEElectronics M6's. They're dirt cheap. I thought they'd be worthless, but they had a nice 3 section flanged plug, which I know from the E6i's makes all the difference in getting a good seal. So I thought I"d try them.
They solved all the problems I'd had with buds before. My observation is that wind noise is low in the hz spectrum. It competes with the bass levels. So what you need on a bike is an earbud that exaggerates the bass. I did this in the past with my E6i's by boosting the EQ in the bass levels on my old MP3 player. Left w/o an EQ adjustment, the E6i's were gutless. I'd turn them up loud to hear some bass and an alto voice or a cymble hit would split my head open. Ouch! But the M6's are naturally bass heavy. They're not well balanced. Not great for off-bike listening. But for on-bike they're perfect because of their natual bias. And I could turn the volume
down a little and still get great results. Plus they have a nice 'round-the-ear cable thingy which makes them stay in place better.
But don't believe me, see the WebBikeWorld review:

I think the specifice M6's might be superceded, but type MEElectronics M6 into Amazon and they are available. I've purchased extras for the future. They're only $18. The photos show a single flange plug, but they come with like 4 different plugs including a large and a small 3 flange plug.
Of course no such earbuds will work well unless one knows how to properly insert the plugs. It ain't easy. And it has to be perfect. You have to test the 2 plug sizes to get the perfect one for your sized ear canal. If you push them in too far, they'll end up hurting after 10 minutes. Not far enough and they're not sealed. I wet them first. When properly inserted it should sound like you just went underwater kinda. Ambient noise should be muffeled. Noise like scratching your face or playing with the earbud cable should sound unusually loud. I spent nearly 20 mins. trying to instruct my wife how to do it right. Then you have to get your helmet on w/o pulling them out in the process. Stretch your helmet open by pulling the chin straps outwards, (do the same when you take your helmet off or you'll rip them out).
But get them in right and you're gonna love the sound. I've become a real evangelist for these little guys. They're amazing.
Try em. How big a mistake could it be? $18 ????
