Broken Yamaha trunk mount - Danger to passenger

My trunk mount is broken. This doesn't appear to be the recall with the metal plate, as mine already has the plate installed. This is the actual mount on the rear of the bike.

My wife's been complaining that when I accelerate, she feels like the trunk is moving... Now I know why.

This could be bad. The whole trunk could come off, with her leaning against it, as this is the part where the trunk locks into the front.

I purchased the trunk kit on 3/7/08.

I did a search on this forum and only found references to the recall. This appears to be a different issue.

Ouch! Just checked mine, all AOK. Got the same bike as you too. Looks like your wife may be "pressing it into service" beyond the design limits. Does she put all her weight against it when you accelerate? You you "honk on" on a regular basis? My wife leans slightly into the acceleration when leaving a light or stop sign, doesn't use the trunk unless she has to. Obvioulsy I can suprise her in traffic moves but she's not totally relying on the trunk to keep her on the bike.

Never seen that before. Get it replaced (warrenty? How good is your dealer?)

I do a lot of group riding, and escort other vehicles a lot, sometimes at speed. Thus, there are many times where we have to move quickly to another spot, or jump forward.

We don't have an intercom yet, so yeah... I guess sometimes my wife would be putting her weight on it, if I jump forward and she doesn't know. But I never ever really get on it with her on the back. She'd kill me if I did.

However, (how do I say this without getting in trouble...) She's light. She wouldn't put much weight on it anyway. She's about 5' 7-ish' with a thin build.

i made mine out of 1/4 aluminum plate. it's adjustable forward and back and easy to make. if you need plans or other assistance pm me.

To me that looks like the others that have been replaced under the factory recall. I'd be calling your local dealer.

Also make sure when she mounts/dismounts the bike that she's not using the case as a handle, or a place to push down on. She may be light, but that'll overload it for sure.

The trunk recall, in addition to installing a reinforcement plate in the bottom of the trunk, also replaces the mounting plate (the part that broke on yours). You should check to see if your was one of the updated mounting plates. They are physically different as there is added plastic ribbing in the area where yours broke. If not, you should still be able to get a new one under the recall.

I have the recall mount and it is cracking. As far as putting weight against it I think it should be able to handle that. Don't sell a back rest pad for it if you don't want people to lean against it. I never have a passenger on when I use the trunk. I am not impressed with Yamaha's trunk.

As a structural engineer, looking casually at the mounts from a distance, I've never been impressed with the stoutness of the top case mounts. I have a removable backrest from garauld which I'm very satisfied with regarding security regarding my wifey. 'Course we don't have the carrying capacity...but she never takes long trips with me..so no issue there.

Many people have had successful miles with their honey leaning against the top case. However, I do occasionally kick it up a notch with wifey on back so I would be feeling very insecure if I had to tell her not to lean too hard against the backrest. :blink: Stories like the O.P above scare me.

Problem solved...

There was an updated mount, on a 90-code, separate from the trunk recall, as one of our members mentioned above.

Evidently, I did have the updated mount plate, per the 90-code. It had the webbing & ribs in the bend. But...

Apparently my old dealer sold me a mount plate for a 1st Gen FJR, and not a 2nd Gen.

If you have a 2nd Gen, the mount plate should bolt right on, no probs. I remember bolting the 1st one on, and the bolts were too short to use the spacers, and the spacers were too long for the correct fit. But, I figured it was a universal kit and installed it without the spacers. It would have been made for both series FJR's, right? Yammy didn't spec different kits...

This created a problem where the bolts pushed the plate down, but the rubber bumpers underneath were pushing up. (See photo below)

When my dealer pulled the new mount plate out today, it was built different underneath. The rubber pads were mounted more to the center.

The new mount plate bolted right up. The new plate is much thicker in areas, has a lot more contact positions, and there's virtually no open gap like the first one.
