A fall ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway every year has gotten to be a tradition with me. Some years I'll slab it one way and ride the Parkway back; when I made my plans for this year, I decided to ride it both ways. Also been a tradition to do it on a Gold Wing for my fall ride, since 1997, so Don Stanley, prepare yourself, this RR contains explicit, uncensored images of a 2010 LeadWing.

I've also enjoyed staying at the old lodges in Shenandoah and on the Parkway. Been nice to come in out of crappy weather to a roaring fire in the great room at Big Meadows. This year I was blessed with incredibly good weather, except for dense fog/heavy mist for 40 to 50 miles between the James River and Roanoke, the weather was perfect. Started on Saturday, Oct. 10th, destination for that night was Peaks of Otter Lodge, mile 85 on the BRP. Got on Skyline Dr. at Front Royal, knew it was gonna be crowded and it was. Once I crossed over onto the Parkway I lost most of the crowd. Saw some nice color on Skyline, though most was not quite at peak.

Hit the fog after crossing the James and had to take it slow and careful over Apple Orchard Mtn. When I checked into Peaks, Abbott Lake looked like this

Next morning, Abbott Lake looked much nicer

Some of the foliage was just at peak and some hadn't started to turn

Thought I was in for great weather, but ran into this a few miles down the road - again

Luckily, I was out of it pretty quickly. Topped off the tank in Roanoke and took a short side trip in Smart View picnic area; I've seen some nice color there in years gone by

Destination for that night was the Allegheny Inn in Sparta, NC, a motel I highly recommend. However, when it was operating, I would stay at Bluff's Lodge in Doughton Park, right on the Parkway. Sadly, it's been closed since 2011 and no one is interested in picking up the concession. Now I hear that there's a big mold

problem there and the Park Service might be considering tearing it down. I rode through there to get a few pictures for old times sake, in case it's gone when I come through next time. The lodge is in the shape of an "L" with a stone patio between the buildings

I spent some pleasant fall evenings kicking back on that patio enjoying some great sunsets

Unfortunately, the restaurant across the Parkway is also closed, and not likely to re open

Next morning, I left Sparta for the Pisgah Inn at mile 408 on the Parkway. For years, this has been my favorite stop, IMHO, the best view of any lodging on the Parkway. Some of the best sunset and sunrise pictures I've taken have been from here. Rode through some great color on the way

Nice RR, great pictures, always enjoyed the BRP. Looks like traffic wasn't a big issue. Thanks for taking us along!

Next morning, the sunrise was worth getting up early to see

The dining room at Pisgah is also arranged with a great view, as long as the weather's nice

Hit the road after a good breakfast, destination Gatlinburg, and had to stop at the Richland Balsam overlook for the obligatory picture

Once in Gatlinburg, I had reservations at the Gillette Motel, another I highly recommend. I had planned to take a one day break from riding; one of my two youngest daughters drove up from Charlotte and we spent the day shopping and checking out two waterfalls on Little River Rd (she's a waterfall fanatic)

Leaving Gatlinburg and heading back the way I came. I planned to stay at the same places on the way back as I had coming down. This is the last overlook on the TN side before Newfound Gap on Rt. 441

Next morning I was treated to another sunrise typical of Pisgah in the fall

Hope you all like sunrise photos, or I might have overdone it. Once again, some pretty color on the way to Sparta

Didn't make many stops on the way to Sparta, as my daughter was going to meet me there to check out another waterfall

Stayed the last night at Big Meadows Lodge in Shenandoah Park. I left the next morning a little late, didn't want to repeat the mistake i made in 2010 when I was on the road too early while the forest rats were still active and one committed suicide on the front of my Wing. I cranked up the stereo and the two that I saw didn't like my choice of music and went the other way . Stopped for one last photo

Should be nice there at least for the rest of the week. Great ride, great weather, great scenery. Tom

Thanks for that. Every time I tried to get some BRP riding in this season it got rained out. Still some riding weather left, but not sure my work and house schedule will allow it.

^^^^^Fantastic photographs and interesting narrative Tom, Thank You! Really enjoyed the picture of the canines, including that two wheeled GW dog! JSNS, Nice RR!^^^^^

Glad to hear you enjoyed the photos and the sight of that Potamus didn't put you off too much...

Thanks to all for the compliments. I missed a ton of great pictures along the Parkway; if I'd taken the cage, I could have pulled over onto the grass when necessary. But when I saw the weather forecast, I knew I'd be kicking myself in the butt if I took anything other than a bike. The Parkway - and its 45 mph speed limit - isn't for everybody, but there is some beautiful scenery there, especially this time of the year. Tom

Thanks Tom! I love the BRP as well. Awesome pictures and very nice report. You pointed out a few sites I've ridden past before, but not in the future.

Very, Very Good Stuff!

I have been on the BRP a couple of times with the bike but never ridden it end to end. That is very high on my list and your wonderful pics are added incentive.

Hope you have a great trip when you are able to do it. The last week of May/first week of June is another good time to ride it. Lots of rhododendron and azalea that grows wild along the road will be in bloom and the leaf peeping crowds won't be there (most schools will still be in session, so vacation crowds will be at a minimum). Tom
