After the discussion about motels, I got to wondering if there is an effective bug spray out there to just spray around in some of the more "questionable" motels along the road to ensure you're not gobbled up by critters during the course of the night. Something to spray around between the sheets and on the carpet that smells more like Fabreeze than Deet. And definitely not "bug bomb" type of stuff as they usually recommend 8 hours of airing out before coming back into the room/house.

I stayed at a "reputable" motel several years ago near Orlando and got ate up by fleas. The guy before us must have shaken his dog off on the carpet. Recently, we took our daughter up to school and stayed in a NoTell Motel on the edge of Amarillo and Bambi got bitten by what must have been bed bugs of some sort. Definitely not fleas or misquito's.

We're off to Mt. Rushmore next week and will probably just be stopping where ever we can so we might end up in someplace less than The Ritz so I'd like to be prepared.

Any experience with this type of product?

Hmm... Not too sure what's out there to fill your need.

However, depending on your plans and how far from Mt. Rushmore you're willing to go, there's a nice little hotel in Sundance, Wyoming called the Bear Lodge Motel <clicky>. Stayed there back in '95 - nice little place run by nice people. My uncle has a cabin near Sundance (relatively speaking - it's maybe 30 miles away or so, but Sundance is the closest town) and is in regular contact with the couple that run the place.

The Black Hills ROCK :good:

CFO was held out there a couple of years and we were based in Custer at the Bavarian Inn a mom and pop place with reasonable rates for the area. Custer is a nice town with a couple of real good places to eat. You might want to consider a reservation in the Black Hills it get's pretty busy in the summer months. Just a thought.

I've never had a bad experience at any lodging listed in the most current AAA tour books I get for just about every trip I take...

I'm pretty sure I've gotten my $$$ worth of the $70 a year fee just by the 50 or more maps I request and they send me in a 12 month period :yahoo:

They seem too expensive for bike towing coverage, but for $14/yr, my Progressive Insurance option includes towing and trip interruption coverage

I believe somebody said they used it and it worked out fine for them. I've not renewed my one year AMA membership as I don't see the point now.

sorry, back on thread and back to your regularily scheduled program...

I would take a tent and camp.
Not really a good option if two up. I've noticed that all the camper photos have one up with all the camping stuff in the pillion position. Don't want a trailer either.
FedEX ???? :yahoo:

Take a look at this. I've seen several folks use this, 2-up, with full camping gear, etc. I have one stashed in the garage somewhere... more than welcome to try it out if you'd like. :)

Interesting question. I was in REI the other day and noticed they are selling a silk or similar fabric sleep sack thing that's very compact for packing, but very full-sized for a person. Stretchy and light, it's supposed to be very non-intrusive on your movement. You can use them as a sleeping bag liner to keep your bag clean longer and give a little extra range to the bag, temperature-wise, but also is suggested for use in motels, etc., for just this reason. I think they were in the 50-75 dollar range. There were several types there. Worth a look maybe.

Just a couple of thoughts from experience and things I've read.

First, try staying at a place that doesn't allow pets or see if they have non pet rooms.

Second, when checking into your room take a few minutes to check out the overall condition of things.

Pull back the sheets and look for any signs of bed bugs or fleas.(Google will give you a quick list of the signs to look for)

Third, Don't place your luggage on the bedding or anything else that bedbugs may frequent.

This will potentially keep them from traveling to the next location, or worse, home with you.

Good luck.

how about a flea collar or four? one for each ankle and one for each wrist.

Hope I don't piss someone off with this response but here is how I work it.

If I am in the south east, including Oklahoma, I always stay in major chain motels. I have had some nasty experiences in Mom and Pops in those states.

In the other states I look for these problems.

Weekly rates

Vehicles with flat tires

Rusty vehicles

The newer the cars in the lot, the better I feel.

If any of the above surface, I am out of there.
