Well, I've got this problem. That damn '05 of mine has a toasted tranny. I knew it was going to be bad, but it's worse. Just talked to the service manager--Zac--and it's going to go over his first estimate by another grand. :( Like maybe three and a half. Gears, dogs, seals, all kinds of stuff. Damn.

This is the bike I just had the engine rebuilt on after burned valves 12-15 thousand miles ago, so after the tranny fix, it shouldn't be ALL that bad of a ride, unless I truly AM cursed. I mean it's an 8 y.o. FJR (about 60K miles) with a freaking almost brand-new engine and transmission, right? I suppose the next big thing to go would probably be the suspension, but who knows? Options are to fix and ride it (maybe the one I really should go with), try to trade it in on a new '13 (Zac's going to talk to the owner about that and we'll discuss Friday), maybe fix it and sell it on my own, and then buy something--new or used, or finally, bring it home in the back of the truck (already taken apart) and see about parting it out. Lack of techy knowledge, or even a good workplace to do it in makes that option pretty iffy.

So I went on the forum and found this thread. Sweet '13, low miles, nice farkles, including Y.E.S. -- BUT -- we have this special requirement here in Cali about emissions, special required California-only equipment, whatever. To bring in and register a used m/c here, I think it has to have 7,000 miles on the odo. Well, I don't know yet what my local dealer will offer--this is all happening now. But that looks like an awful sweet bike in Orlando. Question is, who knows what the exact requirement for a used bike into Cali, and would miles added on the way count. It's about 3K miles, straight line; there's 2K on the FL bike. Maybe I could make it work? Take a couple detours? Does anybody know when that 7K has to be run up? Is it only after I got to Cali that I'd have to prove the mileage, or does it somehow take effect upon transfer of title once the money changed hands?

That looks like a tempting deal, if I could make it work, and unless Roseville Yamaha surprises me with an offer I can't refuse. This would be MUCH more aggravating if I didn't see the possibility of myself riding a 2013 FJR on the other end of all this grief, must admit.

Might as well ask this last question too. If I did decide to do the fly and ride, your thoughts on what to do with the basket case sitting out at the shop? Guess I'm thinking about spending the money to fix it anyway, since it would be a tough sell "as is." It's going to cost me about $575 just to go pick it up, for the disassembly labor to this point. That makes the additional out-of-pocket a "mere" $3,000.

With the possible exception of the crap I expect anyway about how I mistreated the '05 to death, I'd like to hear most any thoughts. Feel like I could use the help.

You might remember that when the forum bought the engine for Patriot's bike about 2 months ago, it was only $1 thousand. It was low mileage and was very clean. It almost sounds as though you could replace the entire lump for less than the repair of just the transmission. Have you considered that route?

If you decide on option 2, I am willing to once again make a sacrifice for the forum. I am about 3 minutes off I-10 just east of Baton Rouge Louisiana. I am willing to, with your money, do a fly and ride to Orlando. I will bring the bike back here which is just over 1Kmiles. I will ride it around for a few thousand miles. I'll bet hppants would also be willing to help by putting a few miles on it for you. Once we determine the correct # of add-on miles are accounted for, you can fly down to ride it back. If you prefer, once again with your money, I can probably ride it all the way to you and you can then pay for my plane ticket back.

Wow. The forum does have a heart! Hey, thanks, Fish. But a few hours after I posted on the Florida "for sale" thread, an apparent buyer popped up anyway. Maybe I nudged somebody off the fence by bumping it.

After a brief romantic fantasy involving 2013 FJRs, I think a reality reaction is setting in. I'm pretty much resolved I'll be giving them the go-ahead tomorrow on the fix of my old girl. I'd hate not to have a Galaxy Blue FJR, after all. As to buying a new engine and starting from there, I'd be so damn lost even if I had my old bike and a brand new engine and transmission sitting side by side in front of me in a state of the art motorcycle shop. I'd still be paying somebody else for all that high-priced labor. And it's good for the economy. Maybe not as good as buying a new one, but good enough.

Mike, I bought my FJR in Nevada with 6300 miles on it, a title with a blank mileage spot, and proceeded to ride it about 2000 miles in 3-weeks before registering it in CA. It went without a hitch. You could do a fly and ride, but you have a lot more miles to cover and a newer model bike. The only real difference is the CA certification which involves the evaporative canister. Anyway, the registration people in Folsom are not to rigorous on MC riders.

Another option, I might be able to hook you up with a near invoice deal with the other Yamaha dealer...at least I had good luck hooking up people with 2012 through Donny there. I'm at the airport and heading to town. Let me know if you want me to check on a deal. I guess it can't hurt to get the price.

Mike,

As noted, the exact mileage # you're looking for when crossing the border back into our tax hungry state is 7,500. Regarding any time frame, Bugboy is close, the actual time frame is 1 year. Not that you can't register it prior to one year, but be prepared to pay the difference in sales tax from where you bought it and good ol' California. You just KNOW it'll be a higher rate here so be prepared to pay more. Our illustrious and caring inspector at our local DMV gave me a really difficult time getting it registered (long story, 2 beer at least), but in the end, AFTER I paid the difference in sales tax for CA, I learned from the DMV robot that if I'd have waited 3 more weeks to register it, passing the 1 year anniversary of the new purchase in AZ, that they would have waived the sales tax difference! Nice folks to see in your rear view mirror. Rant off

If it were me, I'd rebuild the 05'. It's the best bike out there and not to start a Gen I,II or III bashing session but, your bike already has all the goodies you want on it, set up the way you like so why not fix it? Good luck and first in line for farkles if you decide to part it out. (Insert Vultures circling picture here)

Find a motor and do the swap. People seem to wreck these things once in a while, and the motor doesn't much care about being crashed.

Of course, it's just an assumption that this would be cheaper in the long run. Sure the motor is cheaper than your repair, but how much will it cost to swap? And with grungy gears, your old one isn't going to have a lot of value to anyone....

I'll chime in here too. If the bike/car is NOT CA compliant, then it has to have the 7500 miles on it. If it's an approved bike/car, with a CA complaint sticker, it doesn't matter what the mileage is. It can have 1 mile on it and you can get it titled here. I bought my KLR in NV. It was a CA bike, it had a CA emissions sticker on it. The bike only had 300 miles and I was ok.

MIke, you know if you go for the Orlando bike, you really should trust someone that lives local and you've met before to go pick it up, ride it around some to make sure everything's OK - maybe enough to pad the miles some so that with the trip home on a fly'n'ride that you'd be over the 7500 mile requirement.

Now WHO do you know like that?? Someone that lives nearby, say, in a place like beautiful downtown Mims, FL??? Someone with an air-conditioned garage maybe??

Mike, let me think on this for a bit...

My first rattle out of the box is get an new used engine and do a transplant.

I paid 1.2k for a gen2 with 5k miles... but had FjRay and Fairlaner to help do the transplant..

...and w/o their help it wouldn't have been done. (Thanks again guys!)

I do know a local independent tech, 5* Yamaha certified.... I'll ask tomorrow how much he would charge to perform a xnplant.

Hope this helps.

SacMike, your best bet is to find a low mile engine and swap it. Unless I'm missing something, with the tranny repaired you'll still have a 60K engine albeit with a few new parts installed.

Simple math, IIRC Patriot's mechanic charged 10 hours labor to perform the swap. With all their FJR experience Roseville should be able to match that time wise. Figure $1000 labor for the swap + new engine and misc. parts... you're saving at least $500-700 over the rebuild.

Just my $.02
