Best wishes for an excellent outcome Ray! I can tell you from a daughter's point of view (my dad is very obese) that you are saving her from years of wondering how much time she has left with Dad. Congratulations on having the courage to do this for her and you! And be excited - the quality of your life is about to change drastically in the next 6-12 months! You'll be shocked at the things you discover that weight held you back from and how differently people will treat you.

Congrats on the decision. My mother had the surgery some years ago. It resulted in her weighing less than me for the first time in my life. I can without reservation say that it has saved her life. Good karma to ya, man.

I've mentioned it on previous rides, now the day has arrived...
After 3+ years of investigation, a bitter divorce where weight was one issue and a lot of years of trying on my own, I'm heading in Monday morning for bariatric "Lap Band" surgery where my new stomach will be reduced to about an ounce in capacity. This is not a decision made lightly or as a fad quick-fix. I want to live and better enjoy that life, both for myself and for my baby girl. Hey, let's be honest, being skinnier helps performance behind closed doors too ;)

I'm probably done riding for a while as I adjust to the procedure and just plain heal up. They're going to try laproscopic at first, but may have to resort to old fashioned avenues (not the first time my gut has been opened up, so no biggie either way). I'll be at Scripps Memorial in La Jolla Monday and Tuesday at least.

I'll never be a skinny superhealthy John Dumke type of dude, but that's not my goal anyway. I was 195 in my Army Infantry days, so I was always a big-framed dude, but I've been slightly more than twice that at my worst, and the insanity has to end. I'm a little spooked as the time gets closer, which is probably partly the reason for this post to those of you I call friend, and also somewhat absorbing the realization of what ends (no more big ole comforting chow-downs!)

So, catch you all on the other side.

p.s. I'll ask the doc to avoid the temptation of installing any extra farkles while he's in there ;)
Hey, that's gutsball, Rayban. Way to go. Heal up soon and get yourself out to NAFO-I.

Congrats on making the decision to make a positive change in your life. I had contemplated various ways to lose weight, and ended up with a gym membership and some changes to my eating habits. 25 pounds later I'm about 50% of the way there. It will take a while, but you'll definitely see a great improvement in your quality of life! Good luck!

Dang, Dan, you weren't even big.

Funny... I usually only get that comment from women... ;)

Sorry for the hijack... we now return you to Rayban's thread...

RB, here's hoping and praying you have success in your surgery and a quick recovery. My wife is considering the same operation and your right, this takes much investigation and contiplation. Keep us updated. Blessings, PM. <>< :)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. My former boss had the procedure and lost 100 pounds. It can be life changing. You can do some farkling while you recover.

Surgery cancelled due to the fires sweeping North SD County. I was in Poway for a date last night (hoping to get a last bit of fun before going under, ha ha) and it was the weirdest experience of my life. Ash blowing like drifting snow, clothes stink like I spent all night at a scout campout.

It's SWEEPING through at a crazy pace here. My GF in Rancho Bernardo is being evac'ed, she's grabbing her son and heading to Carlsbad. I-15 is closed. It's FAR worse and faster, if possible, than 2003 from what they're saying now.

Thats too bad after such a build up. I hope you wont have second thoughts. Life is hard when you are overweight, I speak from experience. The operation is not common over here, although I bet there would be plenty of takers.

Good luck and stay away from the fires.

Short of a new earthquake or other act of God to further delay things, I'm finally getting in there this Friday, 11/2 at noon. When I'm healed up, I'll post an "ok". Thanks again to all in the community for your words of support.

Don't forget to post while medicated. Should make for some interesting input.

Good luck, man.

Hope it works out as you plan. I hope he doesn't get carried away & decide to make anything else down there smaller. Good Luck! TJ :clapping:

A friend of ours had this done 4 months ago. The results were superb. He healed quickly, and lost weight very quickly with comfort. He never felt hungry. He is so much more active now that his weight loss has accelerated due to all the added activity. He said, "I found new joy in life with this lifestyle change."

Chin up Rayban, all the best and congrats for taking a difficult step.

Holy crap, that was easy. I went under around 2, was up at 4:30, in my room and taking liquids and jello at 6 and released by 9 the next morning. Just have 5 spots on the upper belly that look like super-glued-over bullet wounds and one lower small cut....gotta love Laproscopic stuff! No pain, no pain meds, just gotta stay on clear liquids for a couple weeks while the stomach "adjusts".

Thanks again for the kind posts. I may even go riding tomorrow if I get stir-crazy enough!
