have a meeting in Reno in late July and am strongly considering my first SS1k. My goal(s) are: a certifiable 1K while minimizing slab and night riding, and allowing a few "extra" hours for whatever for my first IBA ride. So thinking if I left home at 0300 this route (according to google maps) gets me to Winnemucca around sunset - so it is slab in the dark but not the more scenic but animal infested other roads, and to the end point by 2230 or so.

Thoughts? suggestions? Thanks!

I've never ridden the 97. Looks like marvelous country. You want to make this in 19.5 hrs (average of 51 mph) and that should be relatively painless. There are a couple of stretches where Google has you at 45 mph (C to D) and at 50 mph (B to C), etc. Keep in mind that any time spent at speeds below your mandated average, you'll spend 2-3 times that traveling at a correspondingly higher speed than your average just to break even. This means 1 hr spent at 10 mph below your target requires 2-3 hrs at 10 mph above your target to recoup.

I like being off the critter-congested roads by dark. Good idea.

Good idea to make sure you get gas at corners in the route. Puts you out there at the farthest reaches of the course and shows you did the whole route.

For reference, here's a link to GPS data I took off a ride done about 6 months ago. Note the speeds on hwy 50 (your area) and on the 395 which I suspect is similar to some of your route. I'm not a really fast rider, but I don't put along (i.e. Harley speed) either.

Cheers,

W2

thanks - I hadn't examined the point to point times/avg speed, but I think part of it is it looks like google seems to route to some vague point in each city (which now has me wondering about the total mileage :angry2: ).. so that's a great point and I need to look much more closely at the result of my casual routing via google. Thanks again - imagine my chagrin after 20 hours and 900 miles!

I've been to, through and around Bend a couple of different ways, and prefer 395 via 31, but that sucks some time and speed compared to the straight and boring 97. Been out Highway 26 as far as Mt Vernon (and then up and over to Pendleton), so I have a feel for what that country is like, and those memories are what have spawned this routing. Don't have a solid idea of Burns to McDermitt but I bet there isn't much traffic!

Think about flipping your route 90˚ to the right. Meaning, you charge slightly south and east of Davis, then a big loping left turn into Reno.

Puts you over a Sierra Pass early on when your fresh and feeling spunky, then wide-open desert roads in NV that are fairly critter free.

This time in May, leaving at 0300, you should easily arrive in Reno before sunset. No joke.

Have a great ride!

you've got so many options. I'm not a big fan of the first half of your route, I-5 from woodland to Redding pretty much sucks, it gets decent for a while around Dunsmuir, but that is short lived.

97 through Dorris ain't any great shakes other than a wanna-be world's tallest flag pole (it isn't, long story). Klamath Falls is the armpit of the world and 97 to bend is slow, heavily patrolled and dangerous passing. FJRray might give you some feedback on that stretch of 97 as that is his turf.

But then after Bend your route gets considerably better.

You're picking a very warm time of year. so you might want to factor some of that in, -heat can be rather fatiquing. I'd sure re-think tis route, not sure why you're heading to that section of orygun, if you have reasons to be in partcular places, please do share as that'll help others better understand your motivation.

If I can offer any suggestions for a great route full of great sites and smart, don't hesitate to ask.

I like that you're finishing in Reno ....be sure to keep me posted, if I'm around I'll sign you off. Maybe i'll even have a parade thrown in your honor and such.

....John

Yea, be careful of RenoJohns idea of a parade.

He once invited me up, with the offer of a parade, and I was literally blinded by the Rainbow stickers and Elton John music.

Be very careful, unless you swing towards that polychromatic spectrum.

George, this guy is going to have to improve his route a bit before a parade is warranted. But if he does, I'll appoint you grand marshal and you can lead ...

Of course, we need to get Wee Willly in the mix, I've been trying to bait him for a ride but he won't bite. He may bring the supervision that will undoubtedly be needed.

Agreed.

Current route is for those who can't afford Ambien.

If route improves, and a parade is warranted, I would be happy to be Marshall and perhaps also honorary "leather boy".

you guys caught some of the motivation(s)...

1. have to be in Reno (really, the beautiful suburb of Sparks) for a week beginning Monday 7/19 so was going to mix business and pleasure and try for my first SS1k by leaving Sunday a.m.

2. I am familiar with many of the segments of this route, so for a first IBA attempt, I felt some confidence in the mix of slab, scenery and avoiding high critter density areas in the dark, and knowing something about the roads, speeds, and traffic. (For ex, this route w/ an 0300 departure gets me up I5 in the dark, and past K Falls and half-way to Bend up 97 before I would expect a lot of traffic). Also, since I am considering this in combination w/ work, this gets me to the end point by 1030 pm which allows a normal quotient of sleep before work the next day.

3. I think I recognize the challenge of Burns to Winnemucca in the middle of the afternoon. I have done 6-8 hours in ~90 degrees a few times so have some familiarity w/ riding in that and that matches the historic "average" temps for that stretch for that time of year (unlike southern NV where its 5-15 degrees 'warmer"). But am cautious about experiencing that temperature after 10+ hours in the saddle.

So RJ, if you'd like to share an alternative that gets me from here to there in about 20 hours, (I'm old and need my beauty rest after about that time) minimizes critter areas in the dark, and has a documentable 1k w/ gas every 200 or so, I'm all ears and appreciative; that's why I'm a askin'

My personal best day to date is 700 miles mostly on slab from El Paso TX to Needles CA in 12 hours... so I THINK I can do 1000 in 24, but I'm not interested in JUST banging out the miles on the slab, (although I recognize that about 1/2 of this route is pretty damn straight, but at least according to google, the route is still almost 20 hours w/o stops) and it didn't seem wise to plan a route that could take >20 hours.... but this is new to me and why I'm asking and why I appreciate the input!!

but really, thanks, a parade won't be necessary

OK, Here is one of a billion possibilities:

Get a few quick slab miles then pick up 49 through Grass Valley Downieville etc ..nice roads and you'll be fresh and able to enjoy them.

...through Quincy, up to Chester ...then aim for Susanville. Not bad, good sites

Take 139 out of Susanville which is quiet obscure and very pretty. Up to 299 (at Adin) then aim for Alturas.

North on 395 (watch speed) to Lakeview ..then (again watch speed) to 140

Note just a short time on 395 as it is slow and heavily patrolled.

140 is a wonderful groovy road and from here-on-out you can pretty much boogie

Stop in Denio for a quick break ...

North on 201*/202* through Fields.

Burns

Then south on 78*/95*

*Note these are pretty much the only roads in Orygun where you don't have to drive 15mph. No guarantee of no fuzz, but usually pretty safe.

At McDermitt you're in Nevada !!! ..and the easy cruising that you've had for the last hours continues.

Winnemucca you're 160miles to the finish, now ...just focus and cruise on in to reno. we'll have at least one light on for ya.

this route has some decent roads, you get the good stuff in the morning when you're fresh, you have roads you can boogie if you need/want to ...and some very scenic areas that most will never see ..so good bragging rights.

and like I said, this is one of a billion possibilities.

hope this helps ..John

EDIT: If you end up doing this, please let me know, there are a couple of MINOR tweaks that we'll want to do to drop a couple of miles and make it more fun. Ie: don't go all the way to chester, instead to around the east side of Almanor and get gas in Westwood, this is more scenic, drops a few miles that you have to spare and westwood is awesome.

Dan,

I think Google has a very good capability to measure distance. You'll be off less than half a mile in 1000 miles if you and Google agree on the route taken (0.05%?). You certainly won't miss it by 10%.

The speed issue with Google "probably" resides in their database for speed along that route of road. I suspect they just take the distance (pretty accurate) and divide by the speed to get time on the route. It might be more sophisticated but I doubt it simply because the amount of data required to first measure then keep accurate "real" road speeds is a big deal....lots of work for little gain. Only the Government gets involved in those kinds of deals routinely.

Thanks. Do know most of those roads and my quick re-creation on google I think was nearly 23 hours IIRC... which just seems kind of daunting for a first attempt... call me a wuss, but I was planning on working the next day too. Is 201-202 through Fields paved? I was grouse hunting there 4-5 years ago (spent the night at Fields - now THERE'S a garden spot w/ a vibrant night life...) and think I recall that the main N-S road was gravel?? Pondering.... but again thanks, that's why I am starting to think about this almost 3 months ahead of time.
