Hi,

I am running a CalSci shield on my '08. For me at 6-1, its better than the stock or a VStream. I am still getting more noise (I wear earplugs) and turbulence than I would like. I find my self hunching down on the freeway more than I would like. I have had good experiences with the laminarlip.com products on other bikes. Anyone try a lip on a CalSci shield?

If you buy a custom screen and it's the right size, you should not need a lip. How big is your CalSci, and whats your inseam?

I'd call CalSci before doing anything else. You or someone paid good money for the piece of plastic.

I suspect CalSci will swap it for the right size in order to keep the customer happy. Word of mouth is key.

I ordered mine erroring on bigger than needed. Glad I did after switching to a taller than stock Russell Seat.

The on the fly adjustability makes a tall screen not such a big deal, unlike a bike with a fixed screen.

I agree with Scotty on this. One thing about the CalSci that makes it perform well is good aerodynamic design. I know Mark at Calsci takes pride in his work and I'm sure he'll have an opinion about any additions that will affect the aerodynamic performance of one of his designs.

For my Gen 1 I bought the largest screen available from CalSci with the idea I could trim it down anytime I'd like but so far (over 10,000 miles) I've been happy with it just the way it is. I'm 6'0", the screen is 6" over stock I think. Yes a big sail, but it works good.

My Screen is 23" measured from the bottom peak of the "w" bracked to the top of the shield. I am 6-1" with a 31 inch inseam. I like to sit up with good posture slightly bent forward--rather than being hunched over. I find that with the CalSci I have to hunch forward and really scoot forward to get into any clean air. I find myself hunching forward and looking through the shield at freeway speeds rather than looking over it. This position gives me clean air, but is obviously is not ideal. I want to be able to look over the shield.

Yes, I have tried this combo. My bike came with the stock screen and lip. I bought the CalSci, but was still disappointed with the airflow over the top. With the lip, it does raise the airflow a couple of inches. However, the contour of the lip and the CalSci shield is not exactly the same, so its effectiveness is probably somewhat reduced.

My goal is to sit in quiet air while looking over the shield. I have not been able to accomplish that yet. Next I will try the Cee Bailey with flip. My old Concours with cheap homemade windshield and vents cut in it were far better than what I've gotten from the FJR so far.

Just to be clear. Was the lip you used compatible with the stock shield and then you tried it on the CalSci? If so, maybe a different lip would work better with the CalSci shield. I am about one hour ride from laminarlip and could see if they can find a better fit for the CalSci. I agree with the other posters that Mark and CalSci are great to work with and provide excellent customer service. I am just not sure if the problem is that Yamaha designed the shield brackets to hold the shield at too much of an upright angle. I am reluctant to try spacers because of the thread describing faring damage.

Yes, I used the laminar lip that was designed for the stock shield on my CalSci +4. I doubt that CalSci would recommend using a lip when their design is supposed to be perfect the way it is. It did not work for me (with or without the lip), as I cannot get clean, quiet air while looking over the shield. As for spacers, I tried it with and without and didn't notice a significant difference. With the spacers, you have to raise the shield more in overall travel to get the same height as without the spacers.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. Very helpful information. I checked my CalSci invoice. I did order the XL. I have found that the laminar lip usually does help. I may pay them a visit and see if they have a close fit. Please keep us posted on your experiments and I will do the same.
