In the service manual the position of the cams is shown for measuring clearances. The intake and exhaust cam lobes point away from each other in a symmetrical manner. For this orientation the tip of each lobe is not directly opposite the lifter surface -- it's approximately 140 degrees or so from the lifter.

In this guy's description of the clearance check/adjustment he includes the following:

"Ok, now finally we're doing what we came for. Rotate the engine so the cam lobes are 180 degrees from the lifter surface. Slide a feeler gauge between the lifter and the camshaft."

----------

Same clearance at both the ~140 and 180 degree lobe orientations?

Typically YES, the clearance should remain constant from approximately 140-220 degrees (40 to each side of 180).

I just did mine last weekend and checked each one at several points around the base circle they were all pretty much the same measurement.

At 26000 miles all were in the middle of the specified range as well. Nice Bike!

I just did mine this weekend and was wondering the same thing. Glad to hear it. BTW - 51K and still within spec. Would never have tried this myself if not for all the help from this forum.

Thanks everyone!
