Can a Mac link to a Windows network?

My wife's boat anchor of a laptop is on the fritz. She has a few friends that have Macs and has found them more suitable for her needs. We have a Windows network where all of our computers are linked (all have Windows XP pro), including our "server" which is nothing more than another Windows XP pro machine except it has 4.5TB of storage.

While I know I can use our router to connect a Mac to the internet, can I get it to see the data on the "server"? Specifically, Word documents, movie files, etc.
