Does anyone happen to know what this is?

relay.jpg

It sits in the nose of my '06, directly behind and in between the headlight reflectors. Best I can tell by examining wiring diagrams is that it's some kind of relay, but I haven't been able to confirm that. The reason I'm concerned with this bad boy is that I need to change its orientation 180 degrees....from hanging below it's bracket, to sitting above it....and I had fears of it being some kind of tip over sensor or something. I'm heavily involved in a game of "hide the big-*** ballast" and by moving this thing, I can win the game by placing one under the headlight reflectors.

Not sure what it is, but the tip over switch is near the rear of the tank.

Ibeam'll tell ya here in a bit... :p

I just looked at the manual. (08)

It looks like either the radiator relay or the headlight(on/off) grip warmer relay. (on an 08)

I'm not sure, but the wiring diagram shows a "Relay unit" with 11 or 12 wires going to it, colours (as best as I can tell) are:

Blue with white tracer (could be one or two);

Red/black

Red

Pale blue/white

Red/white

White/blue

Black/red (could be one or two)

Red/green (or red/blue?)

Blue/yellow

Pale blue

If this is it, the orientation won't matter (apart from water getting to the contacts), it's just a couple of relays and some diodes.

It's called the "Relay Unit".

There are a bunch of diodes and two relays inside -- the starting circuit cut-off relay and the fuel pump relay.

On the '05 and earlier FJR's this unit was located back under the seat.

I'm not ionbeam, but do have his seal of approval!!

In the electrical parts locations diagram in the FSM that is called the "Relay unit", item #19 on the A diagram, item #20 on the AE.

And item 21 in the parts fiche, called "Relay Assy".

That should clear things right up... It's a relay!!

I'm wondering why you have what appears to be a five-lug rim and tire in the front of your bike. Maybe if you take that out, you'll have room for your ballast...

What, you don't carry a spare tire on your bike!? I used to have it mounted on the back of my top case, but I thought that looked really tacky

(that's actually the spare for a Kendon trailer that's standing up next to the bike)

Thanks to all who've replied here so far. It appears that everyone agrees it's simply a relay, therefor, relocating it should not be an issue as long as I protect it from excessive moisture buildup.

That's funny. I was just thinking it looked an awful lot like the little thingamabob I saw under my seat when I was removing my rear shock.

Yep, that's it. Fred, didn't you have to repair a broken wiring terminal on that relay unit? Seems like I remember someone having to do a fix there.

Fred, that crossmember with the seat latch sure looks pretty -- i.e., no paint missing.

On my '04 the seat's plastic frame has rubbed off a lot of the paint on that crossmember. There are two little rubber bits protruding down from the seat frame but they must get squished flat -- hard plastic rubs on the painted surface.

Oh well, just a little wear and tear.
