A lot more distance from a cell actually....and use it while moving. That's the appeal of a cell.
And even in the remotest parts of.....say Nevada....you still can easily go between the farthest distances with the stock tank at less-than-ludicrous velocities. So, no.....tying a plastic container that can spill fuel out a vent isn't something I'd want to do.
If spare gas is critical I'd use an MSR bottle or two.
