I'm considering getting a used FZ1 or FZ6 for a second bike. What I want to pay puts some in the 22-25,000 mile category.

I sold my '02 FZ1 before it had enough miles to worry about chain replacement. Figuring some of you ride these things too, can anybody tell me what the average life of a chain/sprocket set is under average riding conditions? Would a bike with 25,000 miles on it probably already have new ones at some point in its life, be close to needing them, or is it another 15,000 miles away?

I don't have a clue, which is unusual for me as I have been told I think I know everything. But then, what does she know...

Thanks....

Seems it's all in how the chain was maintained and the bike ridden... Look at the sprockets, if they look at all worn, change the set. I would say that if well maintained and ridden within nominal ranges that 15 - 20k is about tops. However, I noted over at the V-Strom sites that some are getting 35K.

GunnyWoof on what 'nut said.

My ZRX's chain and sprockets were fine for the first 20k miles with regular maintenance.

Then I pumped 'er up with about 35 more horses worth of intake, exhaust and engine mods and toasted 'em in the next 5k.

Amazing what you can do when you're not too expeditious the "loud handle". :yahoo:

Wornout chains and sprockets aren't big deal replacement items. Don't let that turn you off an otherwise good buy.

Chains and sprockets are pretty cheap to change up. Stick with the steel and they will last a lot longer than the lighter variety. A decent new chain, and front and rear sprocket will probably equal less than $200. Remember to keep them chains oiled and adjusted properly and they should be good for a while. I usually check my chain for slack/oil maybe once a month....Usually put on the chain wax and adjust the chain every other time Or as needed.

Thanks for the replies. Now I know and will just assume I will have to do a chain job along with a valve adjustment.

Guess I should get a shop manual, and see if I can handle the valve adj. myself. Hate to spend $3500 on a bike and have $700 worth of maintenance waiting. :glare:

zzzzip, I have not owned a bike with chain and sprockets for many years untill I bought the FZ. You know my riding style.

I have 10k miles on the FZ and had to adjust the chain once, and that came at 2K miles. I clean and oil it often, and expect at least 20K+ out of the set. Well, I probably won't see 20K miles (I hope) it's for sale. :glare:

You shouldn't be keeping it long--- I know how well you take care of your machines.

Thanks.
