I've asked this question many times to many folks but never received a proper answer. If one is caught speeding in the U.S., does the charge carry over into Canada or if a U.S. resident gets caught in Canada does it carry over in the States?

I'm gonna be watching this one. If it's "no," I'll be coming up your way to do my speeding.

(Not holding my breath tho.)

Paging Bluestreek and MCML to the courtesy phone.

In the U.S. traffic infractions are enforced at the State level. States frequently have rediprocity agreements with other states so infractions in Ohio for example could count against my California license. The USA and Canada do not have a reciprocity agreement when it comes to traffic infractions. If you get a ticket in the USA, Canada is not going to enforce anything. Same goes for getting a ticket in Canada. USA won't do anything. If you don't clear the warrant by paying the fine, or pleading your case, there would likely be a warrant for your arrest. In spite of paying a penalty in the foreign country, any infraction should not have an affect on your license at home. Have a read https://www.carinsurance.com/kb/content35853.aspx. Don't use an Ontario DL in New York state or vice a versa.....cause they do share information....especially the insurance companies.....trust me I know 1st hand.....in lawyers fees

The answer is no. If you have a suspended Canadian license, a US agency might have access to that, which may be what Mike is refering to above. However, the officer has to prove that you knew your Canadian DL was suspended, which would be nearly impossible.

I've worked on the Mexican border, and we have absolutely no system to track citations or license validity in another country. So, if you get a ticket in a foreign country, and they issue a warrant for your arrest, that warrant is only valid in that country, and any action they take is only applicable in that country.

A number of years ago, I got a speeding ticket while on a motorcycle in Ontario.

The ticket absolutely, positively, showed up on my Michigan driving record and in my State Farm insurance premiums.

Because these following special agreements exist:

-New York does assess points for minor violations received in Ontario and Quebec.

-Michigan and Ontario exchange information and take adverse action.

-Maine and Quebec exchange information and take adverse action.

-Florida and Quebec exchange information and take adverse action.

Makes sense, New York, Michigan, and Maine, all border states has to be a lot of cross the border traffic.

Florida, think Florida actually belongs to Canada during the winter months.

Especially if your from Quebec :derisive:

I found out that Tennessee has backed out of any and all reciprocity agreements with other states. Which proved to be very beneficial for me last May.

Mr Canadian,

What are you really asking?

I always go the speed limit of my fjr. I know Nebraska does not come back to MA.

Wide open spaces there to wick it up!

I'll be watching this thread. Would also like to know where they lock you up until you post bail money.

LOL, thanks for your concern. Several years back a small group of us took a few days for play time in and around NC, SC, GA and TN. There were several tickets issued over a three day period. The tickets were simply paid by visa once we returned home and nothing more was done. It is my understanding that things have changed and "if" this was to occur again, it would impact things here in Canada. Whenever I ask I always get the same mixed comments.

Canadian FJR Riders exceed the posted legal speed limits? And I am just now learning this here on an FJR Forum Dog Pile Friday! What could possibly be next, is someone going to start telling me that Bustanut joker has a sexual thing for sheep and RadioHowie has carnal knowledge of Manatees?

From my limited knowledge, unless the particular state has a reciprocal agreement with the particular province, the speeding ticket would not show up on your driver abstract record, therefore no points, no insurance ramifications. Trouble is, the reciprocal agreements are always changing so you takes your chances. If you want to know if a ticket hit your Canadjan record, you can request a copy of your driver abstract. BTW, the one I got in Idaho didn't show on my Ontario abstract.
