I know that there are quite a few FJRforum members from Northern California. I thought I'd drop this one out and see if any of you can help. My wife and I are considering moving from Las Vegas to a safer, educated, well maintained, family oriented town. We'd like to do this sometime within the next two or three years, but are open to even moving this summer pending the sale of our current home (in the Las Vegas market it won't take long). I do not want to live in any major metro area, but also don't want to be too far from an international airport. We love our vacations :)

We both have interest in northern california. I love to hike and ride the FJR. My wife and I both love to run (half marathons and marathons are not uncommon). We hate shoveling cars out of snow. The beer must flow freely in the community, but there also must be adequate fitness centers. We don't mind paying more in taxes as long as the funding is used well to support good roads, schools, parks, and public services. I absolutely want to live in a town with a university and a modern medical facility. Does Chico fit this description? What other cities should I look at online before I take a trip out that direction?

Thanks a ton for any input.

Your location will depend on how much you can afford for housing. Many areas in NorCal fall into the category you seek. Another town closer to Sac airport than Chico that comes to mind would be Davis.

Housing affordability is directly related to income. If we can both get jobs, we should be able to afford a home. That's my ingorant stand on the issue. Thanks though.

Let me rephrase that. It needs to be a town where a high school teacher and ER nurse can afford to live. Now that narrows things a bit.

Both oregon and cali are communist states....I wouldn't choose either. Fly your red flag high commies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have an avatar, either....does that bug you? Oh, I live in texas.

Davis is outrageously expensive (and is known locally as "The Peoples Republic of Davis"). I think they even have a "thought police dept." It IS a university town.

Chico is nice. You might also look at Marysville/Yuba City. Both areas have many commuters to the Sacramento or the Bay area for work. Everything in the more Southward gold country is fairly removed from easy access to the Sacramento airport (Plymouth, Ione, Jackson, etc.).

Hmmm......are we seeing a pattern here yet? Thought police? Can't pump your own gas? Annoyance at my not having a profile? Issues that need to be addressed on the west coast are being thoughtlessly forgotten. Anyone ever heard of the word...."I"?

Yeah how 'bout.............. I..... would never live in Texas as there are narrowminded people out there :p

And where's the Texas supermodel avatar anyway ? :D

She's in cali....brushing up on her russian...so she can speak with you nazi *******s. Wait, what am I saying...I'm half german. Um.....stolicnaya? lololol

ER Nurse is easy. They are in demand all around here and they are paying pretty well. The bad news is that with a shortage, there are many hours to work.

Teachers are always needed. Especially Math and Science. Teachers are very employable and they'll pay you based on your experience and the pay isn't bad. You are looking to be paid well over the average for the areas you live in.

For example, Orangevale has a household average income of $53k. This figure is a few years old. You'll be looking at doubling that with your professions +/- 20% (negotiate well, house prices are up and are a good argument for being top tier paid)

Chico is not a metropolis. Chico State is a good school. It has a reputation of being a party school, but everyone I have ever hired from there have been very well prepared for the life of work. I now look for Chico grads when hiring.

Sierra Nevada brewery is in Chico...beer flows very well there.

You can easily buy 5 acres about 10 miles out of town and live on an orchard, farm, etc.

It is growing like every other place and the place you buy today will be surrounded in 10 years.

By the way, Central Cali and the Sierra are pretty staunchly conservative.

Another area to "look at" just East of Chico would be Grass Valley/Nevada City. About 20 miles North of Auburn (I-80) on Hwy 49 (So roughly 35 minutes--non-commute--from Roseville, a bustling city Northeast and bordering on Sacramento).

You're just going to have to come out here and rent a car. Drive around the areas North of Sac and see what you like. All of the above mentioned locations are part of the Central Valley, so they get HOT in the summer.

Yeah if you have $750K+ Have you looked at any real estate listings in California?? Oregon is a lot more reasonable as far as real estate goes. Portland is one of my favorite citys. Brewpubs and strip clubs in every neighborhood. Very chill atmosphere.

I spent 8 miserable years in Marysville/Yuba City area, what a dirty little red neck s**t hole of an area. Surrounded by rice paddies and the mosquitoes are unbelieavble. It also has a history of massive flooding. Odot would probably like it. Where I live now isn't much better (Rio LInda) but it's cheap, relatively speaking. Personally, I'd live in the bay area if I had my way but until I win the lottery, that's a pipe dream.

Back to Chico, that was my escape to town when I lived in Marysville. It's actually nice, has a college vibe, though slightly red neck. The cops are learning from Sacramento and LAPD so the party atmosphere Chico's famous for is just a fond memory. The hospital is far from state of the art though.

PM me if you need any specific info. Glad to help.

Texas....Texas....only two things come out of Texas....queers & steers....hey odot....you got horns  :p :p
