CHP Motorcycle Officer Remains Critical After Petaluma Crash
Posted: 2:37 pm PDT May 14, 2010
STANFORD, Calif. -- A veteran California Highway Patrol officer who was injured in a crash in Petaluma on Wednesday remains in critical condition Friday at Stanford Hospital, a Petaluma police officer said. Todd Overzet, who has been with the CHP for 20 years, suffered a torn aorta in the crash, which happened around noon near the intersection of Lakeville Highway and Frates Road.
Overzet had been responding to a crash near state Highway 37 when he collided with a silver 2010 Toyota Corolla. Overzet and the car were both heading east on Lakeville Highway. Police Sgt. Ken Savano said as Overzet was approaching Matteri Lane on Lakeville Highway he began to pass a silver 2004 F-150 truck on the left of the broken single yellow center line.
Traveling ahead of the truck was the Corolla, driven by a 73-year-old Novato woman, who tried to make a U-turn as Overzet began to pass the truck, Savano said. The Corolla turned directly in front of Overzet, who crashed his motorcycle into the rear left door of the vehicle and was thrown from his bike. He was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and then transported to Stanford Hospital to be treated for his injuries, which included the torn aorta.
The woman driving the Corolla suffered minor injuries in the crash and declined medical treatment. Savano said authorities "haven't determined fault" in the crash, which remains under investigation. U-turns are permitted on the road "in certain circumstances," such as when no traffic is approaching, he said.
