So how long do thay last . Before you have to change it . Have the original on my 05 .
I got a little over three years on my '03. (Replaced it last year.) I rode it nearly daily for most of that time and never put a 'tender on it. I imagine it could last even longer if maintained properly.

Just changed the one in my '03. Clock and trip meter been droping out for almost 2 yrs. after long rides and trying to restart. Always restarted, but not before dumping the time and miles. I put in a new WESTCO and it's like a new bike again! Even runs better down low rpms.

Mine conked out after 'zactly 4 years and 40K miles on my '04.

Used a batt tender the past couple of years, but not at the beginning.

Mine always seem to last right up to the point that the bike won't turn over anymore, then I have to change the battery. I've tried to make them last longer, but no dice. OK, sorry for being such a smartass....

If you can get near the battery with the bike running you can evaluate the battery condition to some extent by checking with a volt meter before, during and after cranking. IIRC, if ya drop below 9 volts during cranking, or if the battery creeps super slow back up to ~12 volts after cranking, time's gettin' close for a new one.

I changed the one in my '03 this summer.......seemed to still be going strong, but I could just see myself in the middle of BFE and it'd quit.

2 1/2 years and 18k on my 04 battery (no battery tender) before it gave up the ghost and left me on the side of the road. I use a battery tender on the winter now...
