The other day I proved my manhood by riding in the most outrageous thunderstorms I have ever been in. Flash-bang lightning and thunder, high winds bringing down trees on the road, and torrential flooding rain. That went well, except now the bike will only start in neutral. Anyone have a recommendation on which interlock to look into after riding in water?

It's likely that the clutch lever switch is dirty and not making a good connection when you pull in the lever.

You can remove the switch and open it up and clean the contact surfaces.

If you search this forum you'll find help for this fairly easy task.

My opinion is that the problem is in clutch switch..If you have a multimeter you can check it..Works or not..

Take out this coupler and check for continuity or not...

Also you can check the side stand switch with the multimeter in it's connector..

If it dies as soon as you put it into first, it's the side stand switch not going off. Otherwise, it's the clutch switch not coming on. Sounds pretty straight forward. Diag mode should allow you to confirm without tearing anything apart initially.

(edit: Assuming Gen 1 has a diag mode?)

Gen I does have diAG. Put the bike on the center stand and in any gear other than neutral. In the diAG mode, go to diAG Code 20. The 'value' window on the meter assembly will display ON when the side stand is retracted and OFF when the side stand is extended.

The clutch switch does not have a diAG code. The clutch signal can be found at the Cut Off Relay module under the seat, it is the Black/Yellow wire that enables the coil of the relay in the Cut Off Relay module.. The same clutch switch wire color can be found on the main ECU connector (bottom pin row, fifth wire position from the left edge).

DeSudet nailed it; gotta be the clutch switch. If it was the side stand switch, it would die as soon as you put it into gear. Not so with the clutch.

It will start in neutral with either or both switches FUBARED.

I'll start at the clutch switch then. I have pulled it apart before and cleaned it with contact cleaner.

This is so weird...did you know it rains in the summer here?
