Here we are after the 8:00AM meet-up at the Denny’s in Atascadero and a spirited ride over 41, at the rest stop on 46 near Shandon/Chalome. Riders who mustered = Robert Rainey, Rudy Lopez, and myself.
At 10:00AM we arrive at Harris Ranch on I 5, after a run over 33 through Avenal, to 198 East. Lots of gas available here. Didn’t pick up any other riders however?
Back toward Coalinga on 198, then out to the beginning of Los Gatos Creek Recreation area and Los Gatos Creek Rd. Los Gatos Creek road is a twisty country road, and best to not expect to ride it really fast. There are some bumpy spots and occasional gravel scattered on some of the hairpins. Everybody was sucking water through Camelbacks due to the temp on this late April ride being in the mid-90’s in the AM. Man, it's going to be an exceptionally dry year. We did observe a pinnacle of smoke curling upward from Tully mountain in the distance, hope it's under control?
Here’s a pic of Rudy and me at the summit of between Tully Mtn. and Red Mtn.
Exiting the Hernandez Valley at Highway 25 we turned South, for 3 or 4 miles to Bitterwater Rd. which took us West to King City to the pre-chosen lunch stop at El Lugarcito. Umm, shrimp cocktails all around!
Robert in the El Lugarcito Parking lot.
After lunch Rudy peeled off on 101 south toward Paso Robles, Bob and I went east toward the base at Hunter Liggett over Jolon Rd. Through the checkpoint at the base, after having our Driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations, and proof of insurances checked, we stopped at the Ponderosa Campground for a rest stop.
Up and over Nacimiento/Ferguson Rd. to Highway 1.
This next bit was why we wavered and changed the original ride plan at the lunch stop. It was an exhibition of the culmination of stone carving done by artists from a wide demographic.
The site was the Central Coast Sculpture symposium at Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria. This would be our last stop before returning to Morro Bay and the barn.
198.5 miles = a single tank of fuel.
