Welp, yesterday was about as bad a day as anyone can have---almost. I get to work yesterday morning and I am informed that a guy I know was killed Wednesday night on a jet ski at around midnight. Lots of speculation going around but nothing proven yet--they are still searching for his remains as of today--still not found.
Then I have to leave work early, at 4 p.m. central time to run a personal errand. Gear up, take off like any other day. Taking same route I take every day, traffic is steady but still early for 5 o'clock rush hour traffic--not that bad yet. I'm merging onto I55 South, no one on the merge ramp but me, I'm in 4th guessing about 50-60 mph, do a left shoulder ck for clear lane to merge, everything is clear, merge into the lane, look back forward------------traffic stopped 18 wheeler break smoke filled the air. Thank God for ABS, it was in full operation, I am very glad I had them, they worked perfect, I got stopped but barely. Would never have made it I don't think w/out the ABS. Thank God no one was right behind me. So things worked out for the best after all right!!!!!!! nope, things got worse. I made it home w/no further complications.
Got in my truck to go pick up some sod at local nursery, two lane county rural road speed limit of 50 mph, ROW grass has not been cut this year--as yet, so it's kinda high right now. Anyway, as I pass a gravel driveway to my left I notice motion out my driver window, it's a small white and brown fuzzy puppy, he walks out into the road prancing as pretty as you please, not a care in the world, I'm past it long before it ever made it into my lane, but what I saw next was the worse part, behind that puppy, from up the gravel drive, from behind the tall grass, chasing the puppy are two very young children, one little toddler w/unsteady gait followed by her slightly older brother. Straight out into the road after the puppy. I slam on breaks and lay on the horn, now I'm past these children, there was never any danger of me hitting them, but low and behold approaching me from the opposite direction is a late model blue caddy, being driven by what appears to me to be a bout a 90+ year old woman w/the black wrap around sun glasses. I have my truck in reverse, I'm blowing my horn to try to get these kids parents attention, who are apparently no where in sight, I'm flashing my lights at the old lady in the caddy, she never acknowledges my existance---she drives right past me--never lets up. Oh man my gut sinks, I'm sure some of you have experienced such a feeling, I've done all I know to do. I loose sight of the children in my rear view door mirror, all I see is the *** end of a blue caddy. Then I notice a car, traveling in my same lane/direction, slam on breaks and swerve sideways in the road, the lady in the caddy does a nose dive. The other lady jumps out of her car and grabs the puppy up, by this time I have backed up enough that I'm pretty much back on top of where all this took place. The two children follow the lady back up the gravel drive. After it was all over with I was so damn mad and full of emotions and shaking. I notice daddy jogging down the gravel drive toward the street, you can tell he's been working in the yard and obviously lost track of his children. He meets the lady w/the puppy, words are exchanged, fingers are pointed back toward the road and toward the children, I'm too far away to hear the exchange. The lady walks back toward her car, I'm only a few feet in front of her car, she says nothing to me, but she rolls her eyes and shakes her head and gets into her car. I went on to the nursery and stayed shook up all evening, I did not sleep very well last night. I hope today is better. Ride safe, and watch your kids close!
