Heading home tonight in the number 1 (fast) lane, I was going at the rate of traffic, maybe 75 MPH, hanging 3 to 5 seconds off the car in front of me (good habit no. 1). Traffic was particularly dense. But no one on my a**.

At speed we entered a left-hand sweeping flyover (Hwy 24 connector to Hwy 680 north). Looking ahead and through the turn (good habit no. 2), I noticed an upcoming sea of brake lights just through the turn about 100 yards ahead. With two fingers resting on the front brake all the time (good habit no. 3), I quickly decelerated, no problemo. (But did I down-shift adequately?)

Next I looked in my rear-view mirror (good habit no. 4)...

"F**K! Where'd he come from?!"
A huge SUV is FLYING toward me. I just had time to tap my brake lights a couple time (won't waste time doing that again, BTW), and accelerate ahead, giving ****** more time to slow. I dodged up between the slowed and stopped cars.

Man, that really rattled me. I probably should have dropped it another gear as soon as I decelerated, because my accelerator was just a tad mushy when I cranked it on.
