The wife seems to have lost the little rubber mouse knob that is on many laptop keyboards. What is that dang thing called? I don't think I ever bothered to ask, but now that I need to buy one I need to figure out the name. So far searching on Google has not helped me out.

Thanks,

In the early laptop days they were called "J pads" because they were always located by the J key.

I found this by doing a search, I never knew what that thing was called, looks like it is called a "command point" , as stated in step 5 below.

Moving the Pointer on the Screen

Things You'll Need

Laptop Computer

Steps

1 Step One

For a trackpad, gently glide your index finger across the trackpad surface to move the pointer. The pointer moves in the same direction as your finger.

2 Step Two

Position the pointer and gently tap the trackpad to select an icon, text, or a graphic.

3 Step Three

Double-tap the pad (or double-click the trackpad button) to open an icon.

4 Step Four

To drag, position the pointer on an icon and tap the trackpad twice, but keep your finger down after the second tap and drag it in the direction you want the icon to go. (It's a down-up-down motion.)

5 Step Five

For a command point, gently guide the command point with your index finger to move the pointer. Push the command point to move it faster.

6 Step Six

Guide the command point in the direction you want the pointer to move. These tend to need a light touch.

7 Step Seven

To drag, position the pointer on an icon, press the left button on the wrist-board (it's easiest to do this with your thumb or another finger), and then move the finger on the command point to move the icon. Release the button and the command point when you've got the icon where you want it.

Dell - Latitude D610

On my dell latitude it's called a pointing stick. In the control panel go to mouse and it's shown there.

It's called a trackpoint cap. Send me a snail mail addy and I'll send you a couple.

[edit] Correction, it's a trackpoint on an IBM. It is a stick pointer, as pointed out above by others on a Dell.
