Considering a move - Reno

I am considering a move west. I am covering California and Nevada (everything except Vegas) in my job now. The person that had that territory is taking a new job. I have been asked to cover it until they find a replacement. I can throw my hat in the ring for that role. Being a Texan I am allergic to state income tax. This means that setting up residence in the Reno area is probably the best bet. Anyone have any recommendations in regards to areas to avoid and areas to choose? I have been looking at homes in the Sparks area and have found some I like. The current environment has got us grounded as my customer is not allowing sales reps to visit so for now sitting in Texas is fine. When they allow us to visit again I will be flying from Reno to LA and SD but likely driving to the Bay area and Redding.

Joe, if you are going to commute to Ca from the Reno area you are going to need a good 4WD vehicle. Ain't no flat land driving on that commute. 

Can't really help you on the Reno/Sparks area as it's growing fast.

Bring your bike, the roads are are soooo good out here.

Bug - it is really not a commute per say I need to travel into territory a couple of times a month. So it is not a daily commute. On of our current vehicles is a 4WD. Thanks for the response.

Have you ever run across Don Feyma on the Honda ST forums? He moved from upper midwest (Michigan, I think) to the Minden area south of Reno years ago. He did his research, and that area seemed best for him.

I moved from Texas to Washington eight years ago. WA has no state income tax! I wish I had made the move earlier as I feel a lot more "at home" in the PNW (I'm Scandinavian). If you like moderate temperature year round, Western WA is a very nice place to live. Expensive though. If you like hot summers and cold winters, you can go to Eastern WA (actually just east of the Cascades will do). Nature is as good as it gets within the US and MC riding is a dream. I can ride year round (Seattle) more or less. I am currently planning a six-hour ride this weekend that will take me through mountains, canyons, and provide some stunning scenery for the vast majority of the ride

I have to live in my territory - California / Nevada. Yes the PNW is a great location just not in the cards for me at this time.

You are going to need a street legal dual sport bike too.

Minden would not be a good location for getting to your CA accounts. If you are going to locate in NV I would choose Sparks area. Reno is kinda seedy. Reno has a convenient airport for your travels to L.A. and San Diego. Perhaps in the Winter your company would authorize flying to S.F.

Reno is only seedy in the mainly downtown area that most people visit as that’s where the Casinos are located, there are lots of nice Reno districts and even some really nice districts.  The south of Reno is booming with new construction where almost resort type developments are going up. 
Search Google for “ Judgemental Maps”. They put together maps of a city using “ rich white folks “ and “trailer trash “  and other designations that are “judgemental”  and I find the map of Reno fairly accurate. This will help you out on the good and bad areas of Reno.

There is  also Carson City the state capital, 30 minutes south of Reno on a brand new freeway, and Minden / Gardnerville another 30 south of that. This adds to the commute but maybe you work from home some days ?

i don’t know if you plan on buying or renting but there’s a rental shortage as all the smart people are fleeing California and housing is in big demand.

I work from home everyday. The only commute will be to the airport when I need to travel to the places I won't drive in my territory. The plan is to drive when I need to visit Sacramento, Redding, SF and San Jose and fly to LA and SD. Generally there aren't any restrictions on flying if you are making your plan.
