Recently Consumer Reports sent me an email asking me to contact my representatives in Washington and complain about fuel economy standards and the price of gas. I believe these are worthwhile goals so I went to the Consumer Reports website where they have automated the process of contacting your representatives. At that point you have the ability to edit their canned message to Congress.

The edit I added was to encourage Congress to consider motorcycles in any comprehensive changes to the fuel economy situation. If hybrids can get tax credits, motorcycles should be able to get some kind of dispensation to increase their use (all in the name of fuel economy, of course).

While the fuel economy question has the public's attention, and to some extent, Congress's attention, it seems that this might be a good time to press our case for increased recognition of motorcycles as one component for solving the fuel economy issue.

Please note, this is not intended as a political discussion but merely a suggestion to further the cause of motorcycling. I'm also planning on contacting the AMA to see if they are using this issue to push the motorcycle agenda through their lobbying efforts.

One thing the City of Toronto did to encourage 2 wheels over 4 was change the city's parking bylaws, to allow motorcycles to park for free on city streets that have on-street parking meters or parking machines.

But a step was taken backwards when they won't allow motorcycles to use the new HOV lanes around the city (ie to get to/from the city) unless they are 2 up?....go figure? .....

Do they allow Hybrids with one occupant to use the HOV lanes? If so I would be really pissed. Thats how it works in CA, Bikes and Hybrids one up, use the HOV lanes and cross the bridges for nothing. I save about $8 a day commuting on my bike now that the all the bay crossing tolls are $4.

She'll not just keep you warm in the cold canuck winter nights....she'll also get you HOV privelidges. Love them dual purpose dolls.

Good question....I'll have to ask a buddy of mine in the police dept (since they write the tickets) he might know....

My 'personalized' message...

I urge you to support a bill to improve the miles per gallon performance of cars and trucks through increases in miles per gallon standards, also called CAFE standards.

A recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report found that the average fuel economy for vehicle fleets in the U.S. has not improved in two decades. I found this to be true when I needed to replace my personal vehicle, a 1986 4-cylinder pickup. The only "modern" pickup I could find that provided similar payload and fuel economy was a diesel. This is shameful, as are the tax credits currently available for very large SUVs.

I also submit for your consideration the inclusion of motorcycles in any comprehensive changes to fuel economy legislation. If hybrids are eligible for tax credits, motorcycles should be able to receive dispensations to increase their use as well, since they: 1) have been a proven means of transportation for over a century, 2) nearly all average greater than 40 mpg highway, and 3) are MUCH less environmentally damaging to build than any existing hybrid (although currently the "fad", hybrid batteries are NOT environmentally friendly).
